Irene Cho of La Habra was impressive in her American Junior Golf Assn. debut, shooting 77-72 to tie for second in the AJGA Texas Junior Classic last weekend at Columbia Lakes Resort in West Columbia, Texas.

Cho, a Sunny Hills High sophomore who finished a county-best 12th in the CIF-SCGA high school championships last fall, finished a stroke behind Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla.

Cho plays on the Lancer boys’ team this spring because Sunny Hills does not offer girls’ golf. She is among the top four players for Sunny Hills, which is ranked No. 10 in the county.

Priscilla Park of Santa Ana shot 83-84--167 to tie for 24th in Texas. Jay Choe of Yorba Linda was the top county finisher in the boys’ competition, shooting 74-74--148 to tie for eighth.

In another opening-week AJGA event, Steve Conway of Dove Canyon shot 69-72--141 to tie for fifth in the Arizona Junior Classic at the Raven Club in Phoenix. Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda, who was one shot behind the leaders after the first round, shot 69-74--143 to tie for 12th.

Daniel Kush of Tustin (74-70--144), Mike Rim of La Habra (73-71--144), and Taylor Wood of Laguna Niguel (75-70--145) also finished in the top 20.

Hana Kim of Encino won the girls’ division, shooting a two-under 69 Sunday to finish at 140. Angela Rho of Fullerton shot 67 Sunday, but a first-round 80 left her tied for eighth at 147. Stella Lee of Irvine (83-79--162) was 37th.

The Southern California regional tournament is Monday in Bakersfield and the state finals are May 8 at Glendora Country Club.

TOURNAMENT READY

Brea Olinda High seems to have an affinity for tournament play, and with team playoffs approaching, that’s a good thing.

In March, the Wildcats entered two teams in the Chaffey tournament. They finished first and second. Last week, they tied for first in both the Orange Lutheran tournament and the Tribute to Youth tournament in Palm Springs.

“We’re encouraged,” Brea Coach Ken Lutz said. “We know that the playoffs are a one-day deal and if my guys shoot what they can, we’ll be tough to beat.”

Highlighting the Tribute to Youth tournament victory was a hole in one by freshman Chris Heintz on the 14th hole. Two holes later, on the par-5 16th, Heintz chipped in for eagle.

Senior Jason Woodrome has become more consistent since the start of the season, and junior Ryan Sader has found a putting stroke that deserted him early in the year. Sader had five birdies in the Tribute to Youth tournament.
