3 Nadadores Divers Win Medals at Meet

Mission Viejo Nadadores divers Michael Hilde and Brad Kern won medals Tuesday in the three-meter event for 14- and 15-year-old boys at the Speedo National Junior Diving Championships in Mission Viejo.
Hilde, from Whittier, won the gold with 486.54 points and Kern, from Laguna Hills, took the bronze with 422.91 points.
In the girls’ 14-15 one-meter event, the Nadadores’ Kristin Littell of Chino won the silver medal. Brooke Sullivan of Maitland, Fla., won the gold.
Hilde, Sullivan and Littell qualified for the U.S. World Junior Team, which will compete in the World Junior Championships, Aug. 16-20, in Calgary, Canada.
SOFTBALL
Gordon’s Panthers of Los Alamitos recorded their third consecutive shutout at the ASA Junior Olympic Gold National Finals in St. Louis.
Kennedy High’s Michelle Turner pitched a perfect game, striking out nine, as the Panthers defeated the Colorado Legend, 3-0, in their first game Tuesday. Phelan Wright and Kristen Farber of Los Alamitos High and Erin Mobley of Foothill had two hits each.
In the second game, the Panthers defeated the California Strikkers, 3-0.
TRAMPOLINE
Jennifer Parilla of Lake Forest won the Senior Elite Women’s National Trampoline championship last weekend in St. Louis.
Parilla was the 1998 champion, but relinquished the title last year. She is the only trampoline athlete participating for the U.S. in the Sydney Olympics.
Nick Marlin of San Juan Capistrano finished second in the men’s senior competition. Peter Dodd of Mission Viejo placed fifth.
SOCCER
Troy High hired Jesus Miramontes to coach boys’ soccer this season, said Athletic Director John Turek.
Miramontes, takes over for Bob Oliver, who resigned at the end of the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Vanguard announced the promotion of Tim Johnson as women’s volleyball coach. Johnson was an assistant last season for Darrick Lucero, who recently resigned to take an assistant men’s coaching position at Long Beach State.
