Doug Nicol, who recently accepted a position as girls’ basketball coach at Notre Dame High, has decided to remain as coach at Burroughs.

“This was more than a basketball decision,” said Nicol, who had guided his alma mater to a 124-73 record in eight seasons. “Burroughs came through and let me know just how much they wanted me to stay.”

Nicol is the fourth girls’ basketball coach from the region to reconsider his resignation, following Dave Munroe of Hart, John Harbour of Camarillo and Errol Garnett of Glendale.

* David Humphreys has resigned as boys’ basketball coach and wife Krista Humphreys has resigned as softball coach at Canyon High.

David has been appointed assistant men’s basketball coach at Cal State Bakersfield.

Bakersfield has won five NCAA Division II national championships in the last five seasons.

In two seasons, Krista established herself as one of the region’s best softball coaches. A former All-American at Arizona and an Alemany High graduate, she turned a struggling program into a Division II playoff contender. Canyon will seek its fifth coach in six years.

She has accepted a position as a math teacher at Bakersfield South High but will not coach. She will pursue a master’s degree in counseling at Cal State Bakersfield.
