MacGinnis Leads Villa Park Past Valencia

Villa Park, ranked third in the county, defeated Valencia, 62-42, to advance to the semifinals of the Taco Company Invitational boys’ basketball tournament Thursday at Anaheim High. Villa Park plays Esperanza at 8 p.m. at Anaheim in one semifinal.

Guard Matt MacGinnis led all scorers with 16 points for Villa Park (2-0).

Senior forward Kenlan Briggs scored 12 points for Valencia.

In the La Habra tournament:

Calvary Chapel 78, Whittier Pioneer 70--Bryan Filkey had 18 points, Tony Olivas made three three-pointers and scored 17 points and Landon Beaver had 15 points for Calvary Chapel (3-0). The Eagles play Northwood at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

At the Hacienda Heights Wilson girls’ basketball tournament:

El Dorado 75, La Puente Nogales 43--Carly Wade had 21 points and 10 rebounds for El Dorado in a quarterfinal game. Nicole Gerber had 14 points for the Hawks (2-0), who face Walnut in the semifinals at 8 tonight.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Aliso Niguel 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Midfielder Sheena Jarvis scored early in the first half off a Lauryn Birkinshaw direct kick for Aliso Niguel (1-0).

Foothill 1, Newport Harbor 0--Freshman Frankee Kelly scored in the 78th minute.

Mater Dei 1, Northwood 0--Junior forward Alicia Crawford scored on a second-half corner kick for the visiting Monarchs (1-0).

San Clemente 1, Laguna Beach 0--Forward Danielle D’Amico scored for the Tritons (2-0).

In the Benson Cup girls’ water polo tournament:

Laguna Beach 11, El Cajon Valhalla 5--Tina Codini scored four goals and Teressa Codini and Laura Case each scored three for Laguna Beach in the second-round game. The Artists (3-0) play Esperanza in a quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. today.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 2 Marina 3, Long Beach Wilson 0--Sarah Mix and Bree Valbuena combined for 11 saves to shut out Wilson. Cara Chlebicki, Erin Wilson and Kendra Shanley scored for Marina (1-0).

Valencia 10, Orange 8 (OT)--Marissa McKenzie scored both of her goals in overtime for visiting Valencia.
