Laguna Beach Girls Beat El Toro in Water Polo

Unranked Laguna Beach defeated seventh-ranked El Toro, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Villa Park girls’ water polo tournament Thursday at Villa Park.

Tina Codini scored four goals and her sister Teresa had two goals and two assists for the Artists (8-1). Ke’ala Carter had two goals for El Toro (1-1).

Laguna Beach will play Villa Park in a semifinal game Saturday.

In nonleague games:

No. 2 Capistrano Valley 7, Los Alamitos 4--Amber Stachowski had two goals and her sister Aimee scored once for host Capistrano Valley (2-0). Meridith McColl had 12 saves. Susie Lewis had two goals for Los Alamitos (1-1).

Long Beach Wilson 5, No. 5 Newport Harbor 4--Monica Johnson scored with 24 seconds left to give visiting Wilson (1-2) the victory. Cassie Azevedo had three goals for the Bruins, ranked fifth in Southern Section Division I. Katherine Belden scored twice for Newport Harbor (0-1).

In the Fullerton Darren Oliver boys’ basketball tournament:

Kennedy 51, Savanna 41--Phillip Tucker, Chris Johnson and Robert Reyes had nine points each for Kennedy (4-2) in a pool-play game. Turmal Woods scored 12 points for Savanna (0-2).

Whittier La Serna 58, Marina 52--Bucky Nadasdin had 15 points and Chris DeLuca 14 for Marina (2-1), which was outscored, 22-13, in the fourth quarter of the pool-play game.

In the Glendora tournament:

No. 9 Brea Olinda 72, Pasadena Blair 56--Landon Lewis scored 20 points, Erik Giesler had 14 points and five assists and Evan Moore scored 14 points for the Wildcats (2-0).

In the La Quinta tournament:

Corona del Mar 46, Saddleback 41--Idean Shahangian and Zack Brewster scored 11 points each to lead the Sea Kings (1-2) in the pool-play game. Ismael Isais had 20 points for Saddleback.

In the Brea Olinda Ladycat girls’ basketball tournament:

No. 10 Foothill 61, No. 8 Irvine 56 (OT)--Kristen Mann had 35 points and 15 rebounds and made six of her last seven shots, scoring nine points in overtime, for Foothill (6-1) in a consolation-round game.

Kristin Thawley had 20 points and Jody Carlson 16 for Irvine.

In the Fountain Valley Lady Baron tournament:

No. 6 Woodbridge 82, Ocean View 28--Kelsi Sousa scored 14 points, Lara Gray had 12 and Michelle Sanford 11 for the Warriors (6-0). Andrina Valenzuela scored eight points for Ocean View.

In the University South Coast tournament:

No. 1 Troy 64, Corona del Mar 40--Veronica Johns-Richardson had 14 points, nine steals, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the top-ranked Warriors (3-0) into tonight’s 8 o’clock championship game against Huntington Beach. Kianey Givens-Davis had 15 points, seven rebounds and seven steals for Troy. Kristin McCoy scored 16 points for Corona del Mar.

Pacifica 60, Cerritos 58--Marissa Ishii made an 18-footer at the buzzer to win it for visiting Pacifica (2-3). Carolyn Cue had 11 points for the Mariners.

In the championship game of the El Rancho boys’ soccer tournament:

Brea Olinda 1, Bell Gardens 1 (Brea Olinda wins on penalty kicks, 12-11)--The Wildcats (5-0) secured the title when Daniel Benigno scored on a penalty kick and goalkeeper Kirk Pagenkopp stopped Bell Gardens’ next attempt.

In the Mater Dei Premier girls’ soccer tournament:

Mater Dei 2, Atascadero 1--Alicia Hartley and Angela Chavez scored for the Monarchs in the first-round game.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 3 Santa Margarita 8, University 0--The Eagles (2-0) broke open a close game with seven second-half goals. Katie Frattone and Jenny Anderson had two goals each. University is 0-5.

No. 5 San Clemente 1, Edison 1--Sascha Contreras scored first for Edison but Patricia Gallamas tied it in the second half.

No. 9 Marina 3, Cypress 1--Paige Morgan, Erin Yznaga and Jessica Chase scored for Marina (3-0). Caylen Carruthers had seven saves for the shutout.

In nonleague wrestling:

Irvine 52, Capistrano Valley 18--Irvine freshman Manuel Olague pinned Patrick Walton of Capistrano Valley in 3:44 in the teams’ season opener. Defending division champion Brian LaMay pinned Irvine sophomore Jessie Hernandez in 1:08.
