No. 6 El Toro Wins Bill Reynolds Classic

Using balanced scoring and a dominant second half, El Toro defeated Newport Harbor, 53-41, to win the championship game of the Newport Harbor Bill Reynolds Classic at Vanguard University Saturday.

Tournament MVP Matt Green had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Ashkan Nazeri had 13 points and five assists for El Toro (6-0), ranked sixth in the county. Sophomore Will Brown added seven points and seven rebounds for the Chargers, who outscored Newport Harbor in the second half, 24-16.

Tony Melum scored a team-high 20 points for Newport Harbor (5-1).

In the third-place game:

Fountain Valley 61, Riverside La Sierra 54--Forward Matt Ball had 16 points and six rebounds and guard Tucker Fendon had 13 points for Fountain Valley (4-1).

In the third-place game at the Cerritos Valley Christian tournament:

Anaheim 54, Garden Grove 48--Quinn Hawking scored 24 points, Chasin Mitchell had 16 and Brandon Clark added 10 for the Colonists (4-4). Chad St. Clair had 12 points and Paul Guzman 11 for Garden Grove.

In the championship game of the Darren Oliver tournament:

Whittier La Serna 72, Fullerton 64 (OT)--After La Serna’s Jason Koza made a three-pointer with 4.6 seconds left in overtime, Fullerton couldn’t inbound the ball in time and turned it over. Richard Perretta then made a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, where Koza scored eight of his 22 points.

Virgil Bobar had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jack Thompson scored 15 of his 19 points on three-pointers for the host Indians (6-2).

In the third-place game:

Kennedy 62, Estancia 50--Rhema McKnight scored 19 points and Robert Reyes had 16 for Kennedy (5-3), which led, 33-24, at the half.

In the championship game of La Quinta Aztec tournament:

Calvary Chapel 58, Bellflower St. John Bosco 46--Tournament MVP Bryan Filke had 19 points and eight rebounds, Tony Olivas scored 17 points and Isaiah Barney had 15 points for the Eagles (7-1).

In the third-place game:

Los Amigos 64, Huntington Beach 59--Peter Vu made 10 of 11 free throws and scored 20 points to lead Los Amigos (3-3). Vu scored 99 points in four tournament games.

In a consolation game:

Buena Park 52, Corona del Mar 49--Zach Barker made a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift the Coyotes (4-4) in the seventh-place game. Eugene Ikahi had 17 points for the Coyotes. Eric Snell scored 17 points for Corona del Mar (1-3).

In nonleague games:

Century 62, Santiago 44--Ruben Pineda scored 14 points and Chris Ferretti had 13 and 10 rebounds for Century (3-3), which led, 22-8, after the first quarter. Alex Puente led Santiago with 12 points.

Laguna Hills 68, Trabuco Hills 53--Laguna Hills made eight three-pointers, including three each by Jeff Sherman (17 points) and Marc Dimick (15 points). Chris Lee led the Hawks (5-2) with 19 points. Aaron Tudor scored 17 points for Trabuco Hills (3-3).
