* Receivers James Norris of Kennedy and Ramon Perry of San Fernando and quarterback John Valdez of Sylmar have been selected the offensive players of the year from the Valley Mission League.

Linebacker Josh Martin of Sylmar was named the defensive player of the year. Nestor Robles of Sylmar and Robert Avina of Kennedy were chosen co-linemen of the year.

* Quarterback Kyle Matter of Hart was selected player of the year in the Foothill League. Quarterback Kyle Bauer of Valencia was the back of the year, with defensive end Evan Allen of Hart the lineman of the year.

* Defensive end Joe Lemma of Westlake plans to accept a scholarship to Oregon State once he has received an NCAA-qualifying score on his SAT.

* Crespi is nearing a decision on its new coach. Thursday is the final day for candidates to apply. Former defensive coordinator Troy Thomas remains the top candidate, but Crespi Athletic Director Rich Fong, a former head coach at St. Genevieve, also has applied.

TENNIS

* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Alexandre Pavlioutchenkov of Russia, 6-2, 6-3, in a boys’ 18 qualifying match Monday to advance to a first-round match of the Orange Bowl tournament at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Cook, 16, was scheduled to play No. 3-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden in the first round Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

* Pepperdine volleyball Coach Marv Dunphy and 1988 Olympic gold medal winner Jeff Stork will hold a free volleyball clinic tonight for players and coaches from 6:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at Pierce College.

GOLF

* Sophomore Brandon Beck of Oak Park took second place in the 13- to 15-year-old division of the Junior Tour golf tournament at Singing Hills Resort, carding a five-over 149 at the two-day event.

BASEBALL

* Brandon Knight, a right-handed pitcher from Buena High and Ventura College, was selected by the Minnesota Twins from the New York Yankees with the second pick in the Rule V baseball draft Monday.

Knight led the triple-A International League with 184 2/3 innings for Columbus. Knight finished 10-12 with a 4.44 earned run average. The contracts of Rule V draftees are purchased for $50,000. Players must remain on the big league roster for the entire season or be offered back to their original organizations for $25,000.

Montclair Prep graduate Darrell Dent was selected by the Dodgers in the Rule V minor league draft. Triple-A contracts are purchased for $12,000. Players do not have to be offered back to their original organizations.

Dent, who was with the Orioles organization last season, will be assigned to triple-A Albuquerque. Dent, 23, batted .258 with 20 stolen bases at double-A Bowie. He drove in 25 runs and had 12 extra-base hits in 165 at bats.
