Carlsbad No Problem for Mater Dei

Cedric Bozeman scored 17 points and Jamal Sampson had 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots as Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, handed Carlsbad its first loss of the season, 76-60, in boys’ basketball Tuesday at Santa Margarita High.

The Monarchs (6-0) outscored Carlsbad, 41-27, in the second half after Derek Stockalther, who scored 26 points for Carlsbad, got into foul trouble and sat out most of the third quarter.

Six Mater Dei players scored at least eight points each, including Ricky Porter, who had 10.

Greg Nelson made five three-pointers and scored 17 points for Carlsbad. Nelson also had five steals.

In another nonleague game:

No. 2 Santa Margarita 66, Canyon 46--Brandon Rohe was eight for nine from the free-throw line and finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead host Santa Margarita (6-0).

In the first round of the Anaheim Holiday tournament:

No. 4 El Toro 65, Foothill 40--Ashkan Nazeri led El Toro with 17 points and Matt Green and Chris Parish had 16 points each for El Toro (7-0). Chad Bigler scored 15 points for Foothill (3-4).

No. 8 Newport Harbor 63, Orange Lutheran 49--Tony Melum scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds for Newport Harbor.

Katella 60, Los Alamitos 57--Forward Phillip Tyson, who had 28 points, made two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to help seal the victory for Katella (6-0). Los Alamitos missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

Brian Rakusin had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Los Alamitos (1-5).

Magnolia 62, Mission Viejo 59 (OT)--Geoffrey Clayton, who scored 25 points, made four free throws in overtime to help Magnolia (3-5) win.

Mission Viejo’s Greg Villanueva ,made a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Magnolia’s Vincent Bryant had five three-pointers and finished with 20 points. Travis Niesen led Mission Viejo (5-2) with 22 points.

In the El Dorado Gary Raya boys’ tournament:

No. 7 El Dorado 70, Chino 41--El Dorado (6-1) had 11 players score, including Mike Wulff, who scored 18, and Kyle Miller, who had 17.

In pool play at the Tarbut V’Torah Tournament:

Tarbut V’Torah 59, Fairmont 38--Noam Dashti scored 16 points for Tarbut V’Torah (6-0). Jeff Keith scored 21 points for the Lions. Fairmont is 8-1.
