Buena Uses Triangle in 64-48 Victory

Courtney LaVere, Kelly Greathouse and Courtney Young each scored in double figures to lead Buena High to a 64-48 girls’ basketball victory over Los Altos Pinewood High on Wednesday night in the second round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Buena (8-0) advances to the semifinals tonight at 7:30 against perennial Northern California power San Jose Archbishop Mitty at UC Santa Barbara.

LaVere had 18 points. Greathouse had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Young had 17 points. The balanced attack offset Pinewood’s Stanford-bound Sebnem Kimyacioglu, who scored 26 points.

Buena outscored Pinewood, 26-12, in the first quarter,

“We jumped off to a good start, which helped us,” Buena Coach Joe Vaughan said. “We pretty much sustained that for the entire game.

“It was extremely physical, which is what you get with Northern California teams.”

Buena defeated Ayala of Chino Hills, 78-40, in the first round.

In other Tournament of Champions games:

Fresno Edison 58, Chatsworth 52--Liz Sun had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Chancellors (8-4), who were outscored, 5-0, in the final fifty seconds of a Large Schools Division game. Brittney Hamilton had 17 points, including three three-pointers for Chatsworth.

Newbury Park 58, Oakland 56--Casandra Harris made a 12-foot shot with two seconds left to win a consolation game in the Invitational Division.

Harris and Brynn Camerona each scored 16 points for Newbury Park (5-3).

Harvard-Westlake 40, Atherton Sacred Heart 36--Karina Siam scored 14 points and the Wolverines (8-0) won a second-round game in the Small Schools Division.

Harvard-Westlake, ranked second in the region by The Times, trailed, 20-16, at halftime but outscored Sacred Heart, 12-4, in the final quarter.

Nyasha Bralock had eight points.

Ventura 56, Chino 34--Point guard Katy O’Brien scored 10 of her 17 points in the first quarter and had eight assists for the Cougars (9-1) in a second-round Large Schools Division game.

Guard Jen Dooley had 13 points and eight rebounds for Ventura, which outscored Chino, 21-8, in the second half.

In other girls’ games:

Crescenta Valley 71, University of San Diego 57--Jeanine Deno scored 24 points and Emily Forsythe had 20 for the Falcons (6-3) in pool play of the Mt. Carmel tournament.

Ashley Powell had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons.

Marshall 65, Cleveland 63--Tracey Marada scored on a layup as time expired in overtime in the second round of the San Fernando tournament.

Brynne Steward made 14 of 27 shots and finished with 27 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland (6-2).

Bell-Jeff 48, Hoover 42--Ana Coronado had 11 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots in a nonleague victory for the host Guards (4-5).

Bell-Jeff’s Sara Burrola scored 12 points and teammate Jeannae Peoples had 11 and eight steals.

Oaks Christian 49, L.A. Baptist 38--Cherhare Shields had 22 points and 12 rebounds in a nonleague victory for the host Lions (6-5).

Kelly Feirfeil scored 19 points for L.A. Baptist.

BOYS

Notre Dame 80, Modesto Calvary Temple Christian 47--Cody Pearson scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half, when the Knights (6-0) opened a 37-8 lead in a first-round game of the Mission Prep tournament at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

St. Francis 76, Flintridge Prep 46--Michael Jenkins scored 24 points, including four three-pointers, and Brett Mitchell added 19 for the Golden Knights in pool play of the La Canada tournament.

Matt Lauer scored 17 points and Dwight Phelps added 11 for the Rebels (4-4).

Taft 70, San Luis Obispo 55--Mustafa Asghari scored 12 of his 24 points in the first quarter for the Toreadors (6-2) in pool play of the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Steve Smith had 22 points and nine rebounds for Taft, which never trailed.

Georgetown 99, Crescenta Valley 72--James Jenkins scored 27 points for the Falcons (12-2) in a Gold Division game of the Las Vegas tournament.

Razmig DerMugerdichian scored 14 points and Chris Tarne had 12 for Crescenta Valley.
