Masaralla, Spartans Win Title

Tiffany Masaralla made two free throws late in overtime to give host Orangewood Academy a 69-68 victory over Murrieta Calvary Chapel in the championship game of the Orangewood girls’ basketball tournament Thursday at Orangewood High.

Masaralla dominated the game, finishing with 38 points--including five three-pointers--17 rebounds, seven steals and six blocked shots.

Celeste Warriner scored 13 points for the Spartans (5-3), who took a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter before Calvary Chapel rallied.

Kristin Pyburn scored 28 points for Calvary Chapel.

In the third-place game:

Liberty Christian 43, Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep 27--Jackie Scruggs had 11 steals and Alicia Jao scored 12 points for the Minutemen (7-2).

In the Artesia tournament:

Rosary 64, Long Beach Poly 63 (OT)--Jennie Asensio, off an assist from Jen Farner, scored the winner on a layup with one second left in overtime. Judy Karcher had 33 points for Rosary (10-0), ranked No. 4 in the county.

Troy 61, Etiwanda 50--Alicia Komaki scored 18 points, Veronica Johns-Richardson had 18 points and 11 assists, and Amanda Livingston had 12 points and 10 rebounds for top-ranked Troy (7-1), which will play Esperanza in the semifinals today at 6:50 p.m.

In the Chicago Nike Tournament of Champions:

Brea Olinda 57, Chicago Dunbar 41--Junior Daveri Bonnewitz had 12 points, 14 rebounds and four steals and Jackie Lord had 14 points and six assists for the third-ranked Ladycats (6-2), who finished fifth among 32 teams at Evanston, Ill. Chicago Dunbar is 11-2.

In the Santa Barbara tournament:

Edison 36, Ventura 32--Kristen Chidley’s layup with 40 seconds left secured the semifinal win for No. 8 Edison (8-2). Bianca Ziemann had 16 points for the Chargers, who will play Clovis West today at 5:45 p.m. in the final.

In the San Diego Mt. Carmel tournament:

Santa Margarita 62, San Diego Mt. Carmel 54--Kim Bloomgren and Garland Cooper each scored 19 points for the Eagles (9-1), who play Poway in tonight’s final at 7:30 p.m.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

No. 1 Woodbridge 3, Sonora 0--Pieter Berger, Brandon Novoa and Nick Holt had second-half goals and goalie Jason Del Valle had three saves for Woodbridge (6-1-2) in the quarterfinals.

In the Magnolia tournament:

Kennedy 3, Magnolia 1--Tyler Cross scored two goals and Diego Figueroa also scored for Kennedy (6-2), which advanced to play Long Beach Poly Saturday in the semifinals.

In the Puma International High School Classic in Tampa Bay, Fla.:

Mater Dei advances to quarterfinals--The Monarchs beat Tampa Bay Catholic, 1-0, and defeated Tampa Bay Bishop Kenny, 4-0, in the second round. Eric Rolwing scored two goals in the victories and Mark Thornberry had two assists for Mater Dei (10-0-1), which plays Tampa Bay King in today’s semifinal.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 1 Aliso Niguel 7, Estancia 0--Kim Devine scored three goals and Tessa Baker had two assists for Aliso Niguel (9-0-1). Aliso Niguel played without Stacy Lidstrom for the fourth game in a row. Lidstrom had knee surgery Thursday and will not return until the beginning of Sea View League play.

No. 7 Santa Margarita 8, Trabuco Hills 0--Katie Rivera had three goals and teammate Daniella Bosio had two for host Santa Margarita (6-1-1), which had 20 shots.

Shannon Foley, Jenny Anderson and Britany Perkowski also scored for the host Eagles.

Irvine 2, Northwood 1--Senior Kim Tiampo scored two second-half goals for Irvine (7-2-2), the second with five minutes remaining. Jackie Lamm scored for Northwood (1-5-0).

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 2 Capistrano Valley 7, Villa Park 6 (sudden death)--Aimee Stachowski scored both her goals in overtime for the Cougars (5-0), the first with 2:04 left to tie it, 6-6, the second 2:20 into sudden death.

El Toro 7, University 2--Ke’ala Carter and Nicole Sonnenfeld scored three goals each and Brittany Ditto had eight steals for host El Toro (6-1).

Kennedy 12, Santa Ana 11 (OT)--Jacqie Pasion’s fifth goal was the game-winner in overtime for host Kennedy (2-2). She also scored the tying goal with one minute left in regulation.
