Newport Is All Wight, Advances in Pool Play

Annie Wight scored two of her three goals in the fourth quarter to help Newport Harbor pull away for a 6-4 victory over Los Alamitos, during a pool-play game Thursday at the Newport Harbor-Corona del Mar girls’ water polo tournament at Newport Harbor High.

Jenna Booth scored four goals in an 11-5 victory over Poway for Newport Harbor (6-1), the third-ranked team in the county, which advanced to today’s championship pool.

Foothill, the top-ranked team in the county, also advanced to today’s championship pool with an 11-5 victory over Edison and a 10-1 victory over University. Santa Margarita joins Newport Harbor and Foothill in one championship pool.

Capistrano Valley was the lone team to advance to today’s championship pool at Corona del Mar, posting victories over Laguna Beach and Grossmont. Capistrano Valley will play Santa Barbara and Carlsbad in the championship pool at Corona del Mar.

Carlsbad won its pool after a 5-5 tie with Marina. Marina’s Cara Chlebicki had three goals and seven steals for the Vikings (4-3-1), who led, 5-4, until Jamie Relth scored her second goal with one minute remaining for Carlsbad, the top-ranked team in San Diego. Freshman Bree Valbuena had 10 saves and stopped a four-meter penalty shot for Marina.

Carlsbad advanced to today’s championship pool because of its 9-6 victory over Palos Verdes Peninsula. Marina defeated Peninsula, 6-4.
