Valencia Snaps Hart’s Foothill Stranglehold

For the first time since 1992, a team other than Hart High can call itself Foothill League girls’ basketball champion.

Valencia High defeated the seven-time defending league champion Indians, 56-53, on Friday night at Valencia to clinch a share of its first league title.

Stephanie Patterson scored 17 points for the Vikings (16-7, 7-1 in league play), but it wasn’t until Marissa Meadows made two free throws with eight seconds left that Valencia could rest.

Meadows had 10 points and four steals.

Christina Sanchez scored 17 points and Amanda Patton and Leslie Smith each scored 12 for Hart (9-13, 3-5).

Canyon 49, Burbank 38--Courtney Koenig had 23 points, three assists and three steals, and Katie Holdaway had nine points and 11 rebounds for Canyon (8-16, 3-5) in a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Kristin Apnonik scored 11 points for Burbank and Michelle Ducan scored eight.

Santa Paula 56, Nordhoff 43--Sarah Kolbeck had 27 points and 20 rebounds for the Cardinals, who clinched the Frontier League title at Nordhoff.

Santa Paula (18-6, 7-0) outscored Nordhoff, 23-8, in the fourth quarter to clinch its first league championship since 1992.

Newbury Park 53, Westlake 36--Rachel Hever, Jessie Goddard, Cassadnra Harris and Nancy Pabon each scored eight points for the Panthers (19-4, 9-0), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, in a Marmonte League victory at Westlake.

Lottie Kanama scored 11 points for Westlake (9-12, 2-7).

Moorpark 59, Thousand Oaks 42--Kelly Geis scored 12 of her 14 points on three-point baskets and the Musketeers (13-9, 5-5) won a Marmonte League game at Moorpark.

Kristin Nadas and Kaley McDaniel each scored 11 points for Moorpark.

Natalie Olivas scored 12 points for Thousand Oaks (7-17, 2-8).

Royal 55, Agoura 37--Kristen Galbreath had 23 points and eight rebounds and Jamie Blanck added 10 points for Royal (14-8, 4-5) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Destiny Sobel had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Agoura (14-11, 5-5).

Crescenta Valley 54, Glendale 32--Sinnamonn Garrett had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons (14-9, 4-4), who avenged an earlier loss and pulled into a tie with the Dynamiters (13-10, 4-4) for third place in the Pacific League at Glendale.

Pasadena 66, Hoover 36--Tenie Hartounian and Christina Hayrapetian each scored 12 points for host Hoover (9-13, 3-5) in a Pacific League game.

Monroe 46, San Fernando 32--DeShaunda Reed scored seven of her 12 points in the first quarter, when the Vikings outscored the Tigers, 20-3, in a Valley Mission League game at San Fernando.

Reed and Carrie Wiltshire each had 13 rebounds and Shakaria Jones had 12 points and eight assists for Monroe (17-6, 7-1), which has won six consecutive games.

Sylvia Simiano scored 11 points for San Fernando (11-10, 4-4).

Kennedy 44, Sylmar 34--Jevay Grooms had 10 points, 13 rebounds, 13 steals and 11 blocked shots, and Jennifer Barber scored nine points for the Golden Cougars (13-7, 7-1) in a Valley Mission League game at Kennedy.

North Hollywood 71, Poly 31--Kaipresha Price had 19 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and five steals for the Huskies in a Sunset Six League game at North Hollywood.

North Hollywood (16-7, 7-1) outscored Poly, 17-2, in the second quarter.
