Newbury Park’s Parvin Leaves No Lucky Quarter Unclaimed

Share

Nori Parvin of Newbury Park High is among the most superstitious coaches in the region.

In 1995, she had more rituals than players when the Panthers won the Southern Section Division III-A girls’ basketball title.

She’s at it again this season, and the Panthers (20-4) have marched to their first Marmonte League title in five years.

Parvin found a quarter, commemorating the state of Connecticut, and tucked it in her pocket because Connecticut was then ranked No. 1 in the nation in women’s basketball.

Newbury Park won every game.

When Connecticut lost to Tennessee, Parvin got rid of the quarter.

“And we had to go overtime the next game,” she said. “So I put it back.”

Not all the luck has been good.

Last month, leading scorer Bridget Harris suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament. She is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday.

Buena’s girls, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, host No. 2 Ventura tonight for the Channel League championship.

Buena (21-4) clinched its 12th consecutive title with its 73rd league victory in a row on Monday night, but Ventura (24-1) can tie with a victory.

The teams have split two previous games.

Ventura defeated the Bulldogs, 60-57, in the Buena tournament final on Dec. 11. Buena defeated the Cougars, 42-32, in a league game at Ventura on Jan. 20.
