FOOTBALL
* Santa Paula High hired Ed Gomez, its offensive line coach last season, as head coach, to replace Robert “Hoppy” Mumford.
Gomez, 31, a Santa Paula native, played center for the Cardinals and graduated from the school in 1986. This is his first head coaching job. He coached the freshman team at Burroughs in 1998 and ’97.
Mumford resigned last month after guiding Santa Paula to a 24-22 record and three playoff appearances in four seasons. The Cardinals were 8-4 and reached the Southern Section Division XI quarterfinals last season.
* Bob Richards, former coach at Thousand Oaks and a four-time honoree as Ventura County coach of the year, has been hired as an assistant at the new Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village.
Richards, 57, will join the staff of Coach Bill Redell.
GOLF
* The Steve Pate/Duffy Waldorf Charity Pro-Am golf tournament is Monday starting at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Country Club in Thousands Oaks.
Proceeds from the event support local substance abuse and children’s charities.
Several PGA Tour professionals are expected to participate, including Pate, Waldorf and John Daly.
BASKETBALL
* Kingsley Anyanwu, a junior at Crespi, has been cleared to return to practice Monday after suffering a knee injury last month.
