Cypress’ Specht Signs With San Diego State

Jane Specht, who helped lead Cypress College to state soccer titles in 1998 and ‘99, has signed with San Diego State, Cypress officials announced.

Specht, who played at Cypress High, scored 29 goals and had 13 assists last season for the Chargers, who finished 27-0 and were ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America.

She is the college’s all-time leading scorer with 131 points (53 goals, 25 assists).

FOOTBALL

Offensive lineman Scott Lopez, who started at Santa Margarita as a junior last season, has transferred to Newport Harbor High, Sailor Coach Jeff Brinkley said.

Lopez, who lives in Newport Beach, has an older brother, Matt, who also played at Santa Margarita. Scott Lopez helped the Eagles advance to the Southern Section Division I playoffs last season.

* Todd Perez, a former assistant coach at Brethren Christian and Downey Warren, has been named football coach at Saddleback Valley Christian, which will play its first season this fall.

BASKETBALL

Ryan Wilber, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard for 10th-ranked Brea Olinda, has signed to play basketball at Humboldt State, Wildcat Coach Bob Terry said.

Wilber, a first-team All-Orange League selection last season, has averaged 18 points and eight rebounds this season.

LUNCHEON

Cal State Fullerton baseball Coach George Horton and Canyon High baseball Coach Mike Najera will be the speakers Tuesday at the Sports Newsmakers Luncheon at the Arrowhead Pond.

Horton is in his fourth year at Fullerton, having led the Titans to a 136-55 record, two Big West Conference titles and an appearance in the College World Series last year.

Najera is beginning his eighth season at Canyon, where he has led the Comanches to a 139-38 record and two Southern Section Division II titles (1996 and ‘97).

Cost for the luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m. and is open to the public, is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Reservations can be made by calling (714) 758-0222.
