Thousand Oaks boys’ team is already looking to next year.

The Lancers, who had their first postseason appearance in five years end in a 90-43 loss to defending champion and top-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei in the third-round game of the Division I-A playoffs on Tuesday, could be favored in the Marmonte League next year.

Thousand Oaks (18-10), runner-up in the Marmonte League, finished four games behind Simi Valley.

Branduinn Fullove and Brett Michel of Simi Valley will graduate and five of Thousand Oaks’ top eight players, including junior guard Kyle Kegley and sophomore point guard Dave Anderson, will return.

“We’ve already sat down and started to talk about what we need to do in the months ahead and in the summer to get ready for next season,” Coach Rich Endres said.

“I would say we’ll be the team to beat on paper. Of course, a lot can happen between now and November.”

Seniors Jason Weldon of Orange Lutheran and Mike Spargo of St. Bonaventure, quarterbacks during football season, could play crucial roles in a Division IV-A semifinal at Ventura High tonight.

Weldon is averaging 25 points a game for top-seeded Orange Lutheran and Spargo has guarded the opposition’s best perimeter offensive player throughout the season.

“Mike has sacrificed his offense to play defense,” Coach Gil Kim said. “He’s done a good job for us.”

St. Bonaventure (21-4), making its first semifinal appearance, can set a school record for victories tonight, but Kim says that’s the last thing on his mind.

“I remember last year when they came up here and whupped us [in a first-round game],” Kim said.

Was Taurus Davis of Pomona Garey fouled in the final seconds of an 81-77 loss to Simi Valley on Tuesday night in a third-round Division I-A boys’ game?

Bill Burke, Garey’s fiery coach, said Davis, who scored 38 points, was hacked on the play in which Fullove poked the ball away from behind with the Pioneers clinging to a 79-77 lead.

“I didn’t expect to get a lot of calls on the road,” Burke said. “But in a situation like that, in a third-round game of the playoffs, you can’t swallow your whistle. You have to make that call.”

Christian Aurand, Simi Valley’s first-year coach, wasn’t sure if Davis was fouled.

Aurand pointed out that the referees failed to call fouls on several plays earlier in the game when players were roughed up much worse than Davis.
