Esperanza Headed to Semifinals After Win
Shawn Dohrman scored in the ninth minute of the second half to help Esperanza take the lead for good and defeat Coachella Valley, 3-2, in a Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer quarterfinal Friday at Esperanza.
Dohrman’s goal came off an assist from Steve Hively, who headed an indirect kick to the middle of the field. Esperanza (19-6-3) will play Fountain Valley in a semifinal Tuesday.
Esperanza took a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game when Justin Yankavskus scored on a header from seven yards off an assist by Matt McNally.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 3-1 on a goal by Ryan Sullivan in the 16th minute of the second half.
Coachella Valley (13-9-2) had goals by Inrique Regaldo and Abram Solis, who scored with two seconds to play.
Luke Sargent had four saves for Esperanza and Robert Balbuena had 10 for Coachella Valley.
In another Division I game:
Fountain Valley 3, Lynwood 1--Cliff McKinley had a goal and an assist and Sean Iliff and Jon Armour scored goals for host Fountain Valley (19-2-3).
In Division II:
Edison 1, Ventura 0--Eric Blaska scored on a header in front of the goal in the 79th minute after a cross from Danny Collins for host Edison (18-4-2), which will play El Dorado in the semifinals.
El Dorado 3, Los Angeles Loyola 1--Matt Pena broke a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute and Mike Hargreaves scored in the 79th minute for second-seeded El Dorado (28-4).
Andrew Baduria scored a first-half goal for the host Golden Hawks.
In Division IV:
Estancia 7, Santa Ynez 0--Esaul Mendoza scored three goals, giving him 42 this season, and Irving Islas scored two goals for host Estancia (18-1-1), which will play La Canada St. Francis in a semifinal Tuesday.
Eagle goalkeeper Hilario Arriaga had four saves in registering his 13th shutout of the season.
In Division V:
St. Margaret’s 4, Palos Verdes Chadwick 2--Eric Hallenbeck scored his first of two goals midway through the second half to tie it, 2-2, then Mia Gallegos scored with 15 minutes remaining to put the host Tartans (16-6) ahead for good.
St. Margaret’s will play Frazier Mountain in a semifinal match.
