Ventura’s girls are still coping with the abrupt end to their best season ever.

The third-seeded Cougars (25-2), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, gave up a basket with four seconds left and were upset by Channel League rival Santa Barbara Wednesday night in a Division I-A third-round game.

The 15-footer, by Santa Barbara’s Lisa Willett, ended a season that included a share of Ventura’s first league championship in nine years, two wins over rival Buena and a school record for victories.

“I hope a few weeks from now we can look back and enjoy this very successful season for what it was,” Gray said. “It’s just hard to do that today because we all had higher expectations.”
