Alemany and Harvard-Westlake have battled for Mission League girls’ basketball supremacy for three seasons and things don’t figure to change anytime soon.

It won’t take long to find out which team has the upper hand. Alemany (11-3) hosts Harvard-Westlake (9-3) on Monday night at L.A. Baptist.

Harvard-Westlake has been hurt by the absence of 6-1 post player Rolake Bamgbose, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament, but the Wolverines still have plenty of scoring punch with guard Brooke Porter and wing L’Tanya Robnett, both seniors.

Rice-bound guard Kate Beckler of Alemany is the region’s top returning scorer and led the Indians to the Simi Valley tournament championship two weeks ago.

With the league’s best all-around athlete, guard Sierra Hauser-Price, Notre Dame (9-4) is a strong candidate to repeat as the third-place team.

With a young lineup, Louisville (3-5) got off to a slow start and must adjust to a mid-season coaching change. Kevin Wiser, who coached the Royals last season, returns to fill in for Clay Schwartz, who was dismissed during the winter break. With juniors Megan Wiser, Kevin’s daughter, and Sarah Kelso, there’s a solid foundation, but Louisville may still be a season away from contending.

Chaminade (7-5) has one of the region’s best freshmen in guard Christina Zdenek and enters league play with more victories than it had during the entire 1998-99 season, when it had six.

Flintridge Sacred Heart (3-9) didn’t win a league game last season and will struggle to break that streak this season.

Freshman guard Shaina Zaidi is expected to miss Burroughs’ nonleague game tonight against Crescenta Valley because of an injured ankle.
