Irvine Tops No. 2 Santa Margarita

Lindsay Stephens scored two goals to lead unranked Irvine to a 6-3 victory over No. 2 Santa Margarita in nonleague girls’ water polo Wednesday at Heritage Park.

Irvine took a 2-1 lead at the half and outscored Santa Margarita, 2-0, in the third quarter.

Santa Margarita (5-3) scored twice in the fourth quarter, but so did Irvine (6-1).

In other nonleague games:

Fullerton 22, Kennedy 4--Nicole Stafford scored seven goals to increase her season total to 49 as Fullerton (7-5) outscored Kennedy, 15-4, in the second half. Caroline Morrison scored six goals and Megan Snow had four for Fullerton.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 9, Ocean View 7 (OT)--Dulce Hernandez scored two of her six goals in overtime for Saddleback (1-7, 1-0).

Tustin 20, Westminster 5--Tia Montalvo scored seven goals and Jackie McKee had 14 steals to lead host Tustin (11-2, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 10 Corona del Mar 10, Laguna Beach 2--Danielle Carlson and Christina Hewko each scored three goals for Corona del Mar (6-5, 1-0).

Corona del Mar fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter but took control with 10 consecutive goals.

In the Sunset League:

No. 3 Marina 9, Edison 1--Cara Chlebicki scored four goals and had nine steals for visiting Marina (6-3, 1-0).

Sara Mix had 12 saves for the Vikings.

Ali Malczynski scored the only goal for Edison (4-6, 0-1).

No. 7 Esperanza 6, Los Alamitos 4--With the score tied 4-4 going into the fourth quarter, Theresa Conner scored two goals to lift Esperanza (6-2, 1-0).

Jessica Conner, the sister of Theresa, and Katie Rousse each scored two goals each to round out the scoring for the Aztecs.

Esperanza was able to pull out the victory despite the defense of Los Alamitos which held their top scorer, Teresa Guidi scoreless.

Melanie Craig from Los Alamitos (5-4, 0-1) was the games leading scorer with three goals.

Huntington Beach 13, Fountain Valley 9--Stephanie Shafer and Laura Fassnacht each scored four goals for Huntington Beach (3-0). Teammate Kristin Freemon had four assists along with three goals. Goalie Laura Sunderman made 12 saves for the Oilers.

Kelly Newton scored three goals for host Fountain Valley.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 76, Santiago 45--Pacifica pressed its way to a 37-22 halftime lead and cruised to the victory.

The two teams were co-league champions last year and are expected to battle for the championship again this year.

Dominique Valencia scored 23 points and Christine Tran had 14 for Pacifica (7-7, 1-0). Stephanie Reupena had 16 points for Santiago (8-7, 0-1).

Garden Grove 51, La Quinta 27--Gloria Rojas scored 24 points to lead visiting Garden Grove. La Quinta is 2-9, 0-1.
