Gary Grayson, the Westlake High boys’ basketball for 10 seasons, has been replaced by Richard Sanders on an interim basis.

Sanders, the Warriors’ junior varsity coach for three years, will coach the varsity team for the remainder of the season, the school announced Monday. Grayson’s last game was Friday, a 63-62 loss to Newbury Park.

Joseph Pawlick, Westlake’s athletic director, could not be reached for comment. In a published report, Pawlick confirmed Grayson had been fired.

Grayson, who declined comment, guided Westlake to a 125-113 record.

“I was a little surprised,” said junior Tyler Adamczyk, Westlake’s leading scorer and rebounder. “But all we want to do now is win some games.”

According to sources close to the Westlake athletic department, Grayson was replaced because of an incident that took place when the Warriors were in Hawaii last month to compete in the Kona tournament.

Westlake (10-6) defeated Rolling Hills Prep, 77-37, to win the tournament title on Dec. 20.

Westlake’s first game under Sanders will be Wednesday at Thousand Oaks.
