Peterson’s Basket Wins It for El Toro

Chase Peterson scored on a put-back with 21 seconds remaining to give No. 8 El Toro a 67-65 South Coast League boys’ basketball victory at San Clemente on Wednesday.

Ashkan Nazeri scored 19 points and Chris Parrish added 17 for El Toro (14-3, 2-0), which had a 41-35 lead at halftime.

San Clemente (9-7, 0-2) outscored El Toro, 16-10, in the third quarter to tie the game heading into the fourth.

Brian George and Travis Bush each had 15 points for San Clemente.

In another South Coast League game:

Capistrano Valley 59, Mission Viejo 53--Jake Franzen scored 14 points for Capistrano Valley (12-6, 2-0), which outscored visiting Mission Viejo, 18-12, in the third quarter to take a six-point lead.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 71, Kennedy 45--Quinn Hawking was the game’s high scorer with 17 points for host El Dorado (16-2, 2-0). Nick Lehnart came off the bench to score 11 points for the Golden Hawks.

Katella 56, Century 45--Phillip Tyson scored 23 points to lead Katella (7-10, 1-1) to the win.

Loara 58, Cypress 39--Wes Wardrop scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half as Loara (2-0 in league) took a 32-11 halftime lead.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 59, Sonora 48--Akachi Azubuike and Puhk-Maan Sidhu scored 16 each for Fullerton (14-2, 2-0).

La Habra 62, Sunny Hills 41--Tristen Gadberry scored 21 points for host La Habra (9-9, 1-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 72, Los Amigos 52--Jon James scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter to lead Bolsa Grande (12-5, 3-0) to the win.

Pacifica 95, La Quinta 75--Kelly Gurnea scored 24 points and Kyle Cooper added 14 points to lead host Pacifica (7-9, 2-1) to the win.

Matt Blanchard scored a game-high 29 points for La Quinta (1-3 in league).

Rancho Alamitos 62, Santiago 52--Duane Nix had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Bryan Maxwell added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Rancho Alamitos (8-8, 1-2).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 61, Saddleback 47--Darnell Graham scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead Santa Ana (6-11, 1-1).

Ocean View 56, Westminster 39--Jeremiah Bell led Ocean View (17-2, 3-0) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Marques Crane contributed 18 points.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 75, University 68--Nate Jones was the game’s high scorer with 26 points for Costa Mesa (16-4, 2-0).

Laguna Beach 57, Estancia 51--Travis Hanour scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half as Laguna Beach (11-6, 2-0) built a 29-25 lead.

In the Sea View League:

Aliso Niguel 92, Irvine 78--Aliso Niguel (10-7, 1-0) broke open a tight game with a 10-0 third-quarter run. Brandon Siever scored 30 points, Ryan Ross added 20 and Zach Zanolli contributed 19.

Irvine (5-13, 0-2) was led by Jorian Guinn’s 20 points.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 53, Huntington Beach 49--Anthony Vicencia made two free throws with three minutes left to clinch the victory for Esperanza (8-9, 1-1). Matt Sanders scored 14 points and Mike Allen 13 for host Huntington Beach (4-14, 1-1).

No. 6 Marina 63, Fountain Valley 47--Beau Brown was four for six on three-point shots to lead Marina (16-2, 2-0). Teammate Chris DeLuca scored eight of his 16 points in an 18-10 third-quarter run.

In the Tarbut V’Torah tournament:

Tarbut V’Torah 56, Rancho Capistrano Christian 31--Noam Dashti had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Tarbut V’Torah (12-1).
