Melton Helps Loara Knock Off No. 9 El Dorado

Dan Melton scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half Friday night to lead Loara to a 73-59 victory over No. 9 El Dorado in an Empire League boys’ basketball game at El Dorado.

Loara (12-7, 3-0) took over first place in the league.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 79, Rancho Alamitos 68--John James scored 14 of his game-high 38 points in the first quarter to lead Bolsa Grande (13-5, 4-0). James also had 24 rebounds.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 43, Westminster 40--Ismael Isais led Saddleback (4-14, 2-2) with 13 points and nine assists, and Joel Gonzalez had 10 rebounds and four points. Westminster is 3-14, 0-3.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 59, Laguna Beach 52--Ryan Zinchefsky made a three-pointer in the last 30 seconds to give University (12-7, 1-1) a 55-50 lead, and Andy Lawrence (22 points) made four free throws in the remaining seconds to clinch the victory. Travis Hanour scored 27 points for Laguna Beach (11-7, 2-1).

In the Sea View League:

No. 10 Newport Harbor 59, Woodbridge 57 (OT)--Aaron Yarnal and Dustin Illingworth each scored 20 points for host Newport Harbor (14-5, 3-0). Danny Lambert led Woodbridge (11-7, 1-1) with 17 points.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Los Alamitos 54, Fountain Valley 47--Jeff Grgas scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Jeff Smith contributed 15 points for Los Alamitos (15-2, 3-0). Fountain Valley fell to 11-8, 0-3.

No. 6 Marina 72, Huntington Beach 50--Dustin Kaatz scored 24 points, 21 in the second half, to lead visiting Marina (17-2, 3-0). In nonleague boys’ basketball:

No. 2 Ocean View 67, Irvine 48--Jeremiah Bell led the Seahawks with 18 points and 11 rebounds and county assist leader Ryan Westbrook had 10 assists and scored 14 points for Ocean View (18-2).

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Rancho Alamitos 39, Bolsa Grande 31--Juliann Graf scored a game-high 11 points, and Pauline Hughes added 10 for Rancho Alamitos (1-3 in league). Debbie Baeder and Kim Phan scored seven each for Bolsa Grande (3-13, 1-3).
