Westlake Latest to Pull Off An Upset

The only thing predictable about the Marmonte League is that it’s unpredictable.

The upset-a-night trend continued on Wednesday, with Westlake High defeating Simi Valley, 42-33, in a girls’ basketball game at Westlake.

Tawny Thorp scored 16 points, Jacqui Cuffe had nine points and 12 rebounds, and Lottie Kanama added 10 points for the Warriors (9-7, 2-3 in league play).

Elise Metcalf had 14 points for Simi Valley (13-6, 3-2), ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times. The second-place Pioneers, who dropped two games behind leader Newbury Park, had a 19-17 halftime lead but made only one field goal in the third quarter to fall behind, 27-22.

Newbury Park 72, Moorpark 61--Alex Mallen and Bridget Harris each scored 13 points for the Panthers in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Kristin Nadas had 22 points and Kelly Geis added 14 for Moorpark.

Royal 72, Thousand Oaks 35--Kristen Galbreath had 20 points, including four three-pointers, and seven rebounds for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Jamie Blanck added 15 points for Royal (12-6, 2-3).

Chatsworth 54, Granada Hills 41--Liz Sun had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Chancellors in a West Valley League game at Granada Hills.

Jenny Lang added 11 points for Chatsworth (12-4, 3-0), which broke a 24-24 tie at halftime with a 12-2 run during the third quarter.

Kelly Patterson had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Highlanders (9-8, 0-3).

Kennedy 46, Sylmar 33--Sophomore Jevay Grooms had 18 points, 28 rebounds, 10 blocked shots and six steals for the Golden Cougars in a Valley Mission League victory at Sylmar.

Linnae Barber added 13 points for Kennedy (9-6, 3-0), which led, 37-15, after three quarters.

North Hollywood 58, Poly 28--Richelle Sherman had 19 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and the Huskies won a Sunset Six League game at Poly (1-12, 1-2).

Kaipresha Price of North Hollywood (12-6, 3-0) had 15 points, seven assists and seven steals.

Verdugo Hills 46, Canoga Park 42--Deyna Bernard scored 20 points, including four free throws in the second overtime, and the Dons (1-10, 1-2) won a Sunset Six League game at Verdugo Hills.

Cindy Coronado had nine points and 23 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (1-10, 1-2).

Elizabeth Hernandez scored 25 points for Canoga Park.
