Estancia Pulls Off Last-Second Upset of Newport Harbor
Darshaun Garner made a layup off a lob pass from Travis Chandler with one second remaining to lift unranked Estancia past ninth-ranked Newport Harbor, 56-54, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Estancia High.
Jason Simco scored 18 points and Jon Cantrell had 17 for the Eagles (12-8).
Aaron Yarnal scored 27 points for Newport Harbor (14-6).
In the Empire League:
Kennedy 51, Katella 47--Chris Johnson scored 23 points for visiting Kennedy (9-10, 2-2 in league). Katella is 8-11, 2-2.
Loara 61, Century 55--Danny Melton scored 23 points for visiting Loara (13-7, 4-0). Chris Ferretti had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Century (9-11, 1-3).
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 42, Buena Park 41--Juan Rincon drove the lane then passed to David Fells for a layup at the buzzer to give Fullerton (15-3, 3-1) the victory. Akachi Azubuike scored 15 points for the Indians, who scored the game’s final 11 points.
No. 3 Troy 68, Sunny Hills 41--Alex Raco had 11 points and 11 assists and Mark Ahlberg added 15 points and 13 rebounds for Troy (19-1, 4-0), which scored the first 16 points of the second half.
In the Garden Grove League:
Bolsa Grande 63, Garden Grove 59--Jon James’ three-point play late in the fourth quarter gave Bolsa Grande a 59-58 lead and the Matadors (14-5, 5-0) held on for their ninth consecutive victory. James finished with 27 points and 19 rebounds. Paul Guzman scored 12 for Garden Grove (4-13, 2-3).
Los Amigos 71, La Quinta 59--Peter Vu scored 28 points, making 10 of 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory for the visiting Lobos (8-12, 4-2). David Chau added 20 points for Los Amigos. Matt Blanchard scored 20 points for La Quinta (6-13, 2-3).
Pacifica 73, Rancho Alamitos 60--Kelly Gurnea scored 16 points and Joel Bruck added 15 for host Pacifica (9-9, 4-1).
In the Orange League:
No. 10 Brea Olinda 60, Western 54--Ryan Moore scored 24 points and Ryan Wilber added 20 for Brea Olinda (14-5, 3-0).
Western’s Robert Turner scored 25 points for Western (6-11, 0-3).
Valencia 62, Anaheim 49--Eric Dixon had 28 points and 12 rebounds and scored 18 points in the second half when Valencia (8-11, 2-1) put the game away.
In the Sea View League:
Laguna Hills 61, Irvine 54--Marshall Houser had 19 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots for host Laguna Hills (11-9, 1-3).
Woodbridge 64, Aliso Niguel 54--Danny Lambert scored 12 points for host Woodbridge (13-8, 2-1).Ryann Ross scored 17 points to lead Aliso Niguel (11-8, 2-1).
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 54, Dana Hills 29--Sophomore Matt Sweany scored 16 points for visiting Capistrano Valley (13-7, 3-1).
No. 7 El Toro 70, Mission Viejo 56--Ashkan Nazeri scored 18 points and Chris Parish had 13 points and 10 rebounds for El Toro (16-4, 4-0).
San Clemente 79, Trabuco Hills 61--Curtis Bush scored 25 points, making 10 of 13 free-throw attempts, for visiting San Clemente (11-7, 2-2). Brennon Martin and Evan Fields scored 16 points each for Trabuco Hills (9-11, 2-2).
In a nonleague boys’ game:
Palm Valley 54, Tarbut V’ Torah 52--Noam Dashti scored 18 points for host Tarbut V’ Torah (14-2).
In Freeway League girls’ basketball:
No. 1 Troy 63, Sunny Hills 26--Point guard Veronica Johns-Richardson had 17 points, eight steals and seven assists for top-ranked Troy (17-3, 4-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 52, Bolsa Grande 26--Gloria Rojas had 22 points and five steals for host Garden Grove (8-11, 4-1).
Pacifica 80, Rancho Alamitos 27--Diana Barreras scored 31 points for host Pacifica (11-7, 5-0).
