Firefighters Douse Two 5-Acre Blazes

Two fires--one that authorities said may have been intentionally set--started within an hour of each other in the east San Fernando Valley on Saturday, blackening 10 acres, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.

There were no injuries or structural damage.

Early indications were that the first blaze in Tujunga may have been intentionally set, fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

That fire, adjacent to the Foothill Freeway and west of La Tuna Canyon Road, was reported just after 4 p.m.

It took 45 firefighters, aided by three water-dropping helicopters, 36 minutes to extinguish the five-acre brush fire.

The second fire was reported about 5 p.m. in the 9300 block of North Sunland Park Drive, near Roycroft Street in Sun Valley, Humphrey said.

That brush fire, which also scorched five acres, was extinguished about 5:40 p.m. by about 110 firefighters, with assistance from helicopters.

“In both blazes, firefighters were hampered by light but unpredictable winds,” Humphrey said.
