JetHawks Win Big to Clinch Division Title
Juan Silvestre hit two home runs and drove in five runs Sunday for the Lancaster JetHawks in a 13-6 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm to help Lancaster win the California League South Division first-half championship.
Lancaster (40-30) finished two games ahead of the San Bernardino Stampede (38-32), which lost, 6-1, to San Jose on Sunday.
The JetHawks, which struggled to its worst season in franchise history last year and at one time had the worst record in professional baseball, had 16 hits Sunday. Bo Robinson, who had three hits, and Craig Kuzmic homered for Lancaster. P.J. Williams also had three hits and drove in one run for the JetHawks.
Josue Matos (3-3) went 6 2/3 innings for Lancaster. He struck out six, scattered nine hits and allowed just one run.
Silvestre, an outfielder who will play Tuesday in the California/Carolina League All-Star Game in Kinston, N.C., leads the California League with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs.
He will be joined at the all-star game by teammates Terrmel Sledge, another outfielder who had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run Sunday, relief pitcher Brandon Parker, a right-hander who leads the league with 16 saves, and hitting coach Dana Williams.
