A Laguna Hills man who died after crashing into a freeway signpost in Anaheim late Tuesday might have had a heart attack before the accident, police said.

The man, identified as Gus Geoffroy, 78, was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle about 9:35 p.m. when the vehicle left the southbound Santa Ana Freeway at the Disney Drive offramp near Ball Road, said Denise Medina of the California Highway Patrol.

The car struck a signpost, Medina said, but “there was minimal damage to the vehicle, and he sustained no visible injuries from the accident.”

Paramedics who responded to the accident performed CPR on the unconscious man while he was being transported to Western Medical Center-Anaheim, where he later died, Medina said.
