Santa Barbara Wins Third Water Polo Title

Santa Barbara scored three unanswered goals in the final two minutes of the third quarter and went on to defeat Agoura, 7-6, in the Southern Section Division II girls’ water polo final Wednesday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

In a game that featured three lead changes and five ties, top-seeded Santa Barbara (29-1) prevailed on two key plays in the second half to win its third consecutive division title.

The first allowed Santa Barbara to tie the score, 4-4, on the first goal of the second half. Ann Adelman’s shot was blocked by Agoura goalie Michelle Rozzen, but a referee ruled that the ball had passed the plane of the goal.

Later, with Agoura trailing, 7-6, Santa Barbara clinched the victory when De De Perram’s shot glanced off the left post and into the hands of goalie Erin Conaway with 33 seconds left.

In the Division IV final, sophomore Kristina Kunkel scored three of her four goals in the fourth quarter and senior Jamie Kroeze scored twice to help Santa Margarita defeat Corona del Mar, 7-4.

Santa Ana Foothill defeated Irvine, 5-2, in the Division I final.

Travon Bryant of Long Beach Jordan has been selected to the McDonald’s All-American boys’ basketball team.

Bryant, a 6-foot-8 senior, averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds for Jordan, which advanced to the Southern Section I-AA quarterfinals.

Bryant is one of 24 players who will participate in the McDonald’s All-American game March 29 at FleetCenter in Boston.

Veronica Zepeda of Mira Loma Jurupa Valley, Imano Dorsey of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake and Chardonnay Poole of Claremont were named to the Parade magazine All-American girls’ soccer team.
