Camarillo Weathers Storm at Sylmar, 6-4

They played a real winter baseball game Tuesday at Sylmar High, complete with rain, mud, wind and freezing temperatures.

“I can’t believe we got this game in,” Coach Gary Donatella of Sylmar said.

About the only thing missing was lightning because catcher Spencer Wyman of Camarillo provided plenty of thunder with a towering two-run home run in the sixth inning that ignited a four-run rally and lifted the Scorpions to a 6-4 victory in a Westside tournament game at Sylmar.

Camarillo (2-1) was trailing, 3-2, when Wyman sent Greg Ramos’ fastball far over the right-field fence.

The Scorpions later loaded the bases and added two runs on a single by Davey Komatsu.

It was a big day for sophomore infielder Brad Boyer of Camarillo. He contributed two doubles, giving him four extra base hits in three games.

“He’s just a baby,” Coach Scott Cline said.

Boyer is one of a half-dozen Scorpion players who decided to bleach their hair blue last week.

The only problem is the color looks more like aqua.

“It’s changing color,” Boyer said. “My mom freaked out. My dad said, ‘You got to do whatever the team does.’ My Spanish teacher looked at me, ‘Holy Cow.’ ”

Wyman didn’t let anyone touch his hair. He has a recruiting visit set up for California on Friday and didn’t want people to think he was an alien from Mars.

He lets his hitting do the talking.

It’s his third year as a starter and Cline needs him to deliver considering Camarillo starts a freshman, two sophomores and four juniors.

“He got to watch the Borchards, the Yinglings, the Caligiuris,” Cline said. “He got to watch the big boys. Now he’s the big boy.”

Said Wyman: “I learned a lot from the older guys performing in pressure situations and try to emulate them.”

Hector Chavez had three hits for Sylmar (1-2), and Victor Anguiano and Fidelmar Jaimes each had two but the Spartans left too many runners on base.
