Master’s Earns the Eighth Seed

The Master’s College has been seeded No. 8 and plays unseeded Campbellsville (Ky.) in the first round of the NAIA men’s basketball national tournament Tuesday at the Tulsa Convention Center in Oklahoma.

Master’s (26-5) is making its seventh consecutive appearance in the tournament.

Campbellsville (23-10), ranked No. 25 in the final regular-season NAIA poll, lost to No. 3-seeded Georgetown (Ky.), 73-65, in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament last weekend.

Life (Ga.), which twice defeated Master’s this season, is seeded No. 1 in the tournament.

Freshman center Lesley DuBois, who led the Master’s women’s team with 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, was one of three Mustangs selected to the National Christian College Athletic Assn. All-West Region team.

She was joined by teammates Karen Gormley, a junior guard, and Sara Scheffer, a senior guard.

Every season, the Cal Lutheran baseball coach unveils a talented Division III team patched together with no scholarships at a school with high tuition.

As usual, many of the new names are transfers from larger schools.

Left fielder Tom Galante, a junior transfer from UC Santa Barbara, is expected to provide power.

First baseman Dan Loyd is a senior transfer from Murray State, a Division I program in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Center fielder Jim Stout is a senior transfer from Chico State, which won the Division II national championship last season.

Second baseman Mark Torrey is a junior transfer from Colby Junior College in Kansas.

“We have a lot of new guys, but they are experienced,” Slimak said. “We lost 12 guys [from a 33-14 team]. You’d think we’d have a brand new team. But we have experience at key positions.”

Guards Tezale Archie and Brandon Armstrong of Pepperdine were chosen to the All-West Coast Conference tournament team along with three players from Gonzaga.

The Waves, regular-season conference champions, fell to the Bulldogs, 69-65, in overtime of the tournament final Monday night at Santa Clara.

Casey Calvary of Gonzaga, who had 28 points in the final, was most valuable player. Guards Matt Santangelo and Ryan Floyd made the all-tournament team.
