Moorpark’s McCarthy Chosen Coach of the Year

Remy McCarthy of Moorpark College and Mike Miller of L.A. City have been selected junior college men’s basketball co-coaches of the year in Southern California.

Forward Tellys Knight of Oxnard and guards Felix Lang of Valley and Dan Galvanoni of Moorpark were selected to the all-state team.

McCarthy guided the Raiders to a 27-8 record and the semifinals of the state championships. It was Moorpark’s first appearance in the state tournament.

Moorpark tied with Oxnard for the Western State Conference Northern Division title, the school’s first title in 17 years, and established a team record for victories in a season.

McCarthy, a former Moorpark player, has coached the Raiders for three seasons.

BASEBALL

* Power-hitting first baseman Brian Lipman of Royal, an All-Marmonte League selection, is the second player from the league to commit to Troy State.

Second baseman Adam Leavitt of Thousand Oaks, who played with Lipman on the Conejo Valley Big League team last summer, also will attend the Troy, Ala., school.

BASKETBALL

* Freshman center Lesley DuBois, who led The Master’s College women’s team with 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds, was selected to the National Christian College Athletic Assn. All-West Region team.

Karen Gormley, a junior guard, and Sara Scheffer, a senior guard, of the Mustangs also were selected.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

* Junior Dolores Sanchez of San Fernando was selected offensive player of the year and senior Emilia Soohoo of Kennedy was chosen defensive player of the year for the Valley Mission League.

* Senior Molly Cahan of Harvard-Westlake was selected Mission League most valuable player and teammate Sara Deckers, a senior, was most valuable goalkeeper.

Junior Kim Taylor of Chaminade and senior Imani Dorsey of Harvard-Westlake shared the most valuable offensive player honor, while senior Liz Buhn of Chaminade was most valuable defensive player.
