BOYS’ PREVIEWS AT A GLANCE

DIVISION I

* FRESNO CLOVIS WEST (39-2) vs. CONCORD DE LA SALLE (30-1), Saturday

This is the first time since 1981 that no team from the Southern or City sections is in the final. Compton Dominguez will lay claim to the mythical national title if it wins the Division II title, but Central Section champion Clovis West, which beat the Dons early in the season, will beg to differ if it wins the state title in its first championship-game appearance. The Golden Eagles defeated Santa Ana Mater Dei to reach the final. Concord De La Salle’s only loss came against Mater Dei. The Spartans are making their second championship-game appearance, having lost to Crenshaw in 1996. Junior guard Joe See had 18 points in the regional final against Sacramento Jesuit and junior forward Chris Schlatter is a threat inside and out.

DIVISION II

* COMPTON DOMINGUEZ (34-2) vs. NEWARK MEMORIAL (32-0), Friday

Dominguez looks unbeatable with the way 7-foot junior center Tyson Chandler has asserted himself during the playoffs. Chandler blocked 14 shots in the regional final against Bakersfield Foothill. Dominguez, however, could struggle without point guard Micah McKinney, who underwent surgery to repair a wrist injured in the regional final. Dominguez has not lost since Coach Russell Otis moved him to the point. Newark Memorial is unbeaten but played nowhere near the schedule Dominguez did. Marquez Chandler is a point forward and Matt Rassmussen is an inside presence. Both were in foul trouble in the regional final and Newark still won. Newark will need career games from both Marquez Chandler and Rassmussen, or Tyson Chandler on the bench because of foul trouble or injury, to beat Dominguez.

DIVISION III

* TORRANCE BISHOP MONTGOMERY (27-5) vs. PLEASANTON FOOTHILL (29-4), Saturday

Bishop Montgomery is in the state final for the first time and is a favorite to return again next year when the Craven twins are seniors. Errick Craven is averaging 20 points a game and Derrick Craven 17. The junior guards led the Knights over Morningside in the regional final and are part of a Southland graduating class of 2001 that is regarded as one of the best in years. Foothill is led by three-point threats Jay Chess and A.J. Costello.

DIVISION IV

* PLAYA DEL REY ST. BERNARD (26-7) vs. MILL VALLEY TAMALPAIS (32-2), Friday

St. Bernard was a Southern Section runner-up but advanced to the final behind senior guards Brandon Williams and Chrismen Oliver. Bernard McCrumby made eight of 11 shots for the Vikings in their regional final victory over Santa Monica Crossroads. Tamalpais is led by 6-10 center Jair Veldhuis and guards Bryan Defares and Michael Tabb.

DIVISION V

* PRICE (32-1) vs. HOOPA VALLEY (31-3), Saturday

This game will be played at 9:30 a.m., but Hoopa Valley, the only Northern California high school located on an Indian reservation, has a large following and figures to make its presence felt. Hoopa Valley features guard Joe Smith, who averages 23 points a game, and center Adam Ponikvar. Mychal Lynch, Jermaine Jamison and Chris Alexander have been an almost unstoppable trio for Price, the Southern Section V-A champion.
