Cornerstone Is Set for Milestone

Cornerstone Christian High of Camarillo won its 73rd consecutive Condor League softball game on Wednesday and is one victory away from matching Alemany’s consecutive league victories from 1976-83.

But first-year Coach George Baca isn’t exactly giddy about the possibility of equaling Alemany’s feat, which ranks second in state history.

After watching the Eagles rout Villanova Prep, 30-0, in a league opener called after five innings because of the mercy rule, Baca complained about the lack of competition in league play.

“This is bad,” he said. “This is a coach’s nightmare.

“One of the umpires asked me, ‘Do you think you can have one of your pitchers pitch to your [team]?’ ”

The Eagles, two-time Southern Section Division VI champions, pounded 16 hits but only one for extra bases, by design.

“I stopped them all at first base,” Baca said. “I wouldn’t let them go any farther.

“I had to be a good sport. I could have raised [the score] to 60-0, but I just wanted it to end.”

La Reina (4-2) has been solid this season . . . when it plays no more than seven innings.

The Regents suffered their losses in the eighth inning of Simi Valley tournament games with the international rule in effect. The rule allows the hitting team to start an extra inning with a runner on second base.

La Reina lost to Moorpark on a dropped fly and to Notre Dame on a squeeze.

It’s no secret catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest of La Reina is among the best hitting catchers in the region. The Arizona-bound senior is batting .615 after six games.

But her home run against San Marcos in a Simi Valley tournament game had Coach Don Hyatt rubbing his eyes in disbelief.

“She hit the farthest home run I’ve ever seen,” said Hyatt, who estimated the blast at about 250 feet.

“Then she had the courage to come back and say, ‘I didn’t get all of that one.’ ”
