Corona del Mar Loses Twice in Tennis

Top-ranked Corona del Mar suffered its first two losses of the season Saturday in the National High School Tennis All-American Team Invitational at the Palisades Tennis Club.

The Sea Kings lost to Menlo Atherton, 5-4, in the semifinals and were beaten by North Hollywood Harvard Westlake, 6-3, in the third-place match.

Top-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula won the tournament, defeating Menlo Atherton, 7-1, behind the singles play of Jeff Kazarian and Andreas Schirmer. Kazarian knocked off Atherton’s No. 1 player James Pade, 8-5, and Schirmer blanked Preston Walters, 8-0, at No. 3 singles.

Corona del Mar (7-2) was tied with Atherton, 3-3, after the singles competition but lost two of three doubles sets.

Corona del Mar’s No. 1 singles player Brian Morton blew a 4-1 lead to Pade and lost, 8-5. But he came back and teamed with Cameron Ball to beat Pade and Walters, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.

The Sea Kings’ No. 2 team of Peter Kulmaticki and Randy Myers were beaten by Patrick MacKay and Frank Walters, 8-3, and the No. 3 team of Michael Bean and Robert Kennedy lost to Ryen Peck and Darren Lachtman, 8-5.
