Orlando Galvan

LOARA 103 POUNDS JR.

Galvan won a state title, pinning Sal Gonzalez of Merced in the final. He also won Masters and Southern Section Division I championships for the second year in a row.

Tommy Peralta

VILLA PARK 112 POUNDS SR.

Ranked as the county’s No. 1 wrestler in his weight class all season, Peralta finished second at Masters and won titles at the Southern Section Division I meet and the Century League finals.

Robert Valenzuela

WOODBRIDGE 119 POUNDS SR.

Valenzuela finished second in the Southern Section Division II finals and third at Masters.

Frank Gill

CALVARY CHAPEL 130 POUNDS JR.

Gill finished fourth at Masters after winning the Olympic League title and his first Southern Section Division I championship.

Adam Benitez

CALVARY CHAPEL 135 POUNDS SR.

A major contributor to Calvary Chapel’s sixth state title, Benitez finished second in the state and was a Southern Section Division I and Masters champion.

Brian Lemay

CAPISTRANO VALLEY 140 POUNDS JR.

Lemay won South Coast League and Southern Section Division I titles. He defeated Dana Hills’ Sohail Abrahim to advance to the state’s medal round. He finished eighth.

Adam Bones

CALVARY CHAPEL 145 POUNDS JR.

Bones won titles at the Southern Section Division I finals and at Masters. He finished second at state, losing to Lemoore’s Chris Pendleton in the final.

Fidel Archuleta

CALVARY CHAPEL 152 POUNDS SR.

Archuleta put in a lot of mat time during the off-season and it paid off. He suffered a tough, 4-2 defeat in a state semifinal and finished fourth. He was a Southern Section Division I and Masters champion.

Andy Tufnell

CALVARY CHAPEL 160 POUNDS SR.

Tufnell had a heartbreaking, overtime defeat in a state semifinal. He finished fourth at state and won Southern Section Division I and Masters championships.

Conan Williams

CALVARY CHAPEL 171 POUNDS JR.

Williams couldn’t duplicate his Masters victory over Jesse Juarez of North Torrance in a state semifinal. Juarez won, 3-1, in overtime. Williams took first at Southern Section Division I finals and fourth at state.

Alex Becerra

SANTA ANA 189 POUNDS SR.

Although Francisco Gamboa of University beat Becerra at Masters for the title, Becerra came back the next week to take third at state. He is a two-time Golden West League champion and a Southern Section Division II champion.

Joe Ellis

LOARA 215 POUNDS SR.

Though he missed the state medal round, Ellis had the best finish for a county wrestler in his weight class. He was pivotal to Loara’s second-place finish in the Southern Section Division III team finals, winning his first division title.

James Benton

VILLA PARK HWT SR.

Benton was instrumental in the Spartans’ first Century League title in 18 years when he pinned El Modena’s Jeff Rowe in the last match of the league championship meet. Benton narrowly missed placing at state.

SECOND TEAM

ANTHONY ARCHULETA, Calvary Chapel, 103 pounds, So.

Finished third at state and second at Masters; his only two losses of season came against state champion Orlando Galvan.

JOSH GALVAN, Loara, 112 pounds, Sr.

Orlando’s older brother took third at the Southern Section Division III finals and fourth at Masters.

ANIBAL ROSSELL, Dana Hills, 119 pounds, Sr.

A South Coast League champion, he finished third at the Southern Section Division II finals and seventh at Masters.

STEVE ESPARZA, Calvary Chapel, 125 pounds, Jr.

Finished second at the state finals, losing to Brethren Christian’s Michael Simpson, who also beat him at Five Counties.

ALBERT FRAUSTO, Brea Olinda, 130 pounds, Sr.

The Orange League champion took seventh at Masters and fourth at the Southern Section Division I finals.

RISTO MARTTINEN, Dana Hills, 135 pounds, Sr.

Finished seventh at state; third at Masters and the Southern Section Division II finals.

SOHAIL ABRAHIM, Dana Hills, 140 pounds, Sr.

Quest for a state medal got derailed by Capistrano Valley’s Brian Lemay; finished second at Southern Section Division II finals and seventh at Masters.

JOE COBO, Irvine, 145 pounds, Sr.

Two-time Sea View League champion finished eighth at state and second at Southern Section Division II finals.

WILLIE PARKS, Villa Park, 152 pounds, Jr.

Missed placing at state by one match; a Century League champion, he took fourth at Masters and second at the Southern Section Division I finals.

WYATT HOWARD, Irvine, 160 pounds, Jr.

Runner-up at Southern Section Division II finals and finished fifth at Masters; expected to be a medal contender at state next year.

FERNANDO MAGANA, Loara, 171 pounds, Sr.

Among the reasons Loara was a powerhouse this year; finished fifth at the Southern Section Division III finals and seventh at Masters.

FRANCISCO GAMBOA, University, 189 pounds, Sr.

Beat Santa Ana’s Alex Becerra to win at Masters; runner-up at Southern Section Division IV finals but was injured at state and failed to place.

GARY ULLERICH, Capistrano Valley, 215 pounds, Jr.

The South Coast League champ finished third at Southern Section Division II finals.

DAVID LITI, Foothill, HWT, Sr.

Runner-up at Masters; dominated the county heavyweights for most of the season, winning the section Division I and Century League titles.
