Championship Season

* Re “Ventura Finds Another Perfect End to Season,” March 12.

Thirty-eight and zero. The state championship. A perfect season. The Ventura College women’s basketball team has just achieved all of these.

Not an easy task, mind you. They had to defeat some of the top teams in the state, both at the beginning of the season and at the end. They endured some ups and downs but in the end the goal of becoming state champion was realized.

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend every single game and witness this magic firsthand. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Wednesday or Saturday night, looking on as the Lady Pirates conquered yet another foe. Again and again--38 times without being conquered themselves even a single time. Quite an impressive feat!

The team motto says it all: “We play hard.” Indeed, whichever five women were on the court played their hearts out, through sprains and bumps and bruises. No matter what the score was, a Pirate player could be seen diving for a loose ball or crashing into the bleachers after saving a ball from going out of bounds.

I would like to thank each and every member of the team for sharing all of those magical moments with the fans. Thank you, coaches, for keeping the players focused and motivated, even during the many lopsided games.

On behalf of your many adoring fans, thank you for taking us all with you on a thrilling ride through another magical season.
