Hope International, Vanguard Split Double Header

Kim Bento’s run-scoring double in the first inning, helping host Hope International beat Vanguard, 3-0, in the first game of a double header in Golden State Athletic Conference softball Tuesday.

Charity McMillan pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts for Hope International.

Sarah Yarbrough also had a double for the Royals.

In the second game: Vanguard (17-16, 4-4) got a run-scoring single from Jill Jessen in the sixth inning to win 1-0.

Pitcher Cheri Smith (1-4) pitched a three-hitter for Vanguard.

Jody Richards (6-6), gave up only six hits but was tagged with the loss for Hope International (16-12, 5-5).

In other Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Concordia 5-2, Azusa Pacific 4-12--Kori Przygocki’s eighth inning fly ball to right field was dropped, allowing Nicole Lev to score the winning run from third with two out for host Concordia in the first game.

Lev’s two-run triple had tied the score at 4-4.

Carrie Shankes (4-5) picked up the victory for Concordia, going four innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Eagle starter Andrea Castillo went four innings giving up two runs on five hits.

Azusa committed three errors in the first game but in the second game it was Concordia that struggled defensively. The Eagles committed six errors, leading to four unearned runs for Azusa Pacific (25-8, 6-2). Crystal Rosenthal was two-for-two for Concordia (12-15, 4-6).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Vanguard 8, Hope International 1--Megan Godfrey won in singles, 6-1, 6-1 and teamed with Lindsay Doyal to win in doubles, 8-5 for visiting Vanguard.
