Hawks’ Sea View Debut Is an Upset of Woodbridge

George Varvas has taken Woodbridge to another level in 19 years as the Warriors’ track and field coach. Laguna Hills Coach Dave Kurrle was just happy to share the same platform Thursday.

Kurrle guided the Laguna Hills boys’ team to a 73-62 victory over Woodbridge in the Hawks’ first Sea View League meet. It was a bittersweet victory for Kurrle, who considers Woodbridge a model program in Southern California.

“It’s so nice to go against a team that has a good group of athletes that are respectful of the sport of track,” Kurrle said. “George teaches that and it’s almost a sin to beat Woodbridge because of him. I admire the man so much.”

Like Woodbridge, the Hawks usually rely on depth and teamwork to score points, but they received some exceptional individual performances in winning 11 of the 16 events against the Warriors.

Aldee Winter won the 110 hurdles in 15.2 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 42.3 and the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet 3 1/2 inches. Winter’s victory in the triple jump clinched the win for Laguna Hills with just the 1,600 relay remaining.

Winter ran the second leg on that relay, which finished first in 3:35.1. Martin Rocha won the 1,600 in 4:47.2 and gave Laguna Hills the lead for good on the third leg of the 1,600 relay. Christian Monterroso, who also won the 400 in a dirt-track personal best 51.5, then ran the final leg, pulling away for a six-second victory. Jay Dale also won the 100 (11.2) and 200 (22.9) for the Hawks, who won Pacific Coast League titles the last two seasons.
