Perales, Baeder Lead Bolsa Grande Past Winless Pacifica

Pitching and defense provided the difference for Bolsa Grande on Friday, as the Matadors posted a 2-1 Garden Grove League victory over visiting Pacifica.

Victor Perales struck out 15 and left fielder Tom Baeder made a diving, run-saving catch in the sixth inning. Baeder, a junior, continued his heroics in the bottom of the inning with the game-winning hit, a run-scoring double.

Perales (2-2) has recorded double figures in strikeouts three times this season for Bolsa Grande (7-4, 1-0). Pacifica fell to 0-6-1, 0-2.

In another Garden Grove League game:

No. 3 La Quinta 8, Santiago 3--La Quinta took the lead with four runs in the top of the third. Shawn Cochrell had three hits and two RBIs and Jose Castaneda had three hits and three runs scored.

Los Amigos 5, Garden Grove 4--After Garden Grove scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the score, Jesus Rodarte hit a home run in the top of the seventh to win it for visiting Los Amigos (5-4, 1-1).

In the Century League:

No. 1 Villa Park 7, Orange 0--Erik Averill and Joe Gonzalez combined on a two-hitter for Villa Park, which hit four doubles. Brandon Averill had two hits and two runs batted in and Jeff Tuttle had two stolen bases and two RBIs for the visiting Spartans (9-1, 3-0).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 3, Katella 2 (11 innings)--Paul Kerr scored on a passed ball in the 11th inning for Cypress (8-2, 3-0), which sent the game to extra innings when pinch-hitter Rusty Murray delivered a two-out, run-scoring, seventh-inning double.

Kennedy 8, Century 6--The host Fighting Irish (4-3-1, 2-0-1) took control with a six-run fifth inning. Junior Robbie Legro (1-2) struck out six in the victory. Century is 2-7, 0-3.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 4, Troy 3--Brett Smith hit a home run and also got the win for Sonora, going 6 1/3 innings and striking out five. Jacob Mendrin had three hits, including two doubles, and Michael Farias got the last two outs to earn the save for the Raiders (6-4, 1-2).

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 8, Santa Ana 2--Oscar Guzman (2-1) pitched a complete game, had four hits and scored four runs for the host Roadrunners (4-6, 0-2). A.J. Hernandez (0-2) suffered the loss for Santa Ana (3-6, 1-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 10, Savanna 7--Right fielder Kevin Schreck homered and drove in four runs and Mike Davern (3-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the victory. The Wildcats are 5-5, 2-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 5 University 9, Laguna Beach 2--Visiting University hit four home runs, including two from Kevin Conlin, who also had three RBIs and four runs for the Trojans (8-3, 2-0).

In the Sea View League:

Aliso Niguel 8, Newport Harbor 3--Austin Wyly hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for Aliso Niguel (5-4, 2-2). Todd Difley pitched four scoreless innings for the win.

Irvine 3, Woodbridge 2--Alex Park, David Parker and Jeff West delivered run-scoring singles as the host Vaqueros (7-2, 4-0) scored three times in the seventh for the victory. Woodbridge is 1-6, 0-4.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 7, Dana Hills 6 (8 innings)--Billy Pinney singled home Justin Sweet from second base with two out in the top of the eighth for the win.

Mission Viejo 10, Trabuco Hills 2--John Hudgins (4-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10, and also had four hits and two RBIs for the visiting Diablos (6-2, 2-1). Trabuco Hills is 6-4, 2-1.
