Avlas Provides Punch to Carry Kennedy Past Garfield

All-City senior catcher Phil Avlas had three hits, including a triple, and had four runs batted in to lead Kennedy High over Garfield, 10-3, in a Redondo Union tournament second-round baseball game Saturday at Garfield.

The Golden Cougars (4-6-1) pounded 11 hits.

In other Redondo tournament second-round games:

Camarillo 12, South Torrance 2--Geoff Buchanon had two doubles and three RBIs at Camarillo (7-3).

North Hollywood 13, Van Nuys 3--D.J. Lewis hit a grand slam to highlight an eight-run first inning and Andy Gutierrez had two doubles and scored twice at North Hollywood (5-5).

Lewis, a freshman catcher, finished with five RBIs.

In L.A. Baptist tournament games:

Grace Brethren 11, Malibu 7--Shawn McClain had a home run, a double and five RBIs to help the Lancers (6-1) capture the championship at Malibu.

Tim Thompson hit a two-run double to highlight a four-run fourth inning for Grace Brethren. Thompson (5-0) struck out five batters in three innings.

L.A. Baptist 5, St. Anthony 2--Ryan Rycroft pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and Andrew Petersen had two doubles and two RBIs for the Knights (5-2-1) in the third-place game at L.A. Baptist.

Fillmore 8, Cantwell Sacred Heart 3--C.J. Hernandez (1-0) struck out four and allowed one run in his first start as the Flashes (2-6) won the seventh-place game.

Hernandez and John Vega each had had two hits and one RBI.

Highland 21, Littlerock 9--John Santor had a home run, two singles and four RBIs, and Jason Kubel added a home run, two singles and two RBIs for the Bulldogs, who pounded out 16 hits in a Golden League victory at Highland.

Ryan Torres had two doubles and two RBIs and Matt Parris had a pinch grand slam for the Bulldogs (7-3, 3-1).

Royal 8, St. Francis 0--Three pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the Highlanders (8-4) in a nonleague game at Royal.

Derek Albeck (1-0) struck out four and walked none in four innings for the Highlanders, Brian Lipman had three hits and scored two runs and Anthony Gallo drove in three runs.

Moorpark 6, Santa Paula 0--Danny Buckley (1-1) pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and teammate Matt Davenport had four hits and two RBIs in a nonleague game at Moorpark (7-3).

Harvard-Westlake 12, Brentwood 4--Chad Garson had 10 strikeouts and David Milken had a double and a triple for the Wolverines (6-2) in a nonleague victory at Brentwood.

Agoura 12-10, Anchorage Bartlett 1-1--Adam Hersh had two hits and five RBIs in the first game and Patrick Ellis and Paul Farinacci combined on a two-hitter in the second game of a nonleague sweep at Agoura (5-6).

Ellis (1-0) allowed two hits in five-plus innings, striking out three and walking one. Farinacci struck out three and walked none.

Matt Rivkin had four hits in the second game, including a three-run home run.

Agoura sophomore Brandon Canning (1-2) allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked two in the first game.
