Fullove Is Selected to Division I-A Team

Branduinn Fullove of Simi Valley High has been selected All-Southern Section Division I-A in boys’ basketball.

Teammates Dustin Villepigue and Brett Michel were second-team choices.

In Division I-AA, James Jenkins of Crescenta Valley was selected. Todd Tomlinson of Moorpark was a II-AA choice.

In II-A, Keith Jarbo of Burroughs was a second-team choice.

In III-AA, selections included Scott Borchart of Chaminade, Cody Pearson of Notre Dame and Russell Lakey of Harvard-Westlake. Michael Luderer of Notre Dame made second team.

In IV-A, Clint Hamblin of Village Christian was selected. Shant Bekmezian of Providence and Chris Saunders of St. Bonaventure were second-team picks.

In IV-AA, Jeremy Murphy of Oak Park was selected. Second-team selections included Zach Smith of Oak Park and Andrew Moore of Crespi.

In V-AA, selections included Hassan Bassiri and Jesse Foster of Campbell Hall, Josiah Johnson of Montclair Prep and Colin Ward-Henninger of Buckley. Second-team choices were Jason Angell of Santa Clara, Carlos Arroyo of Bell-Jeff, David Gale of Buckley and Abey Malkin of Valley Torah.

In V-A, selections included Peter Beaudin and Matthew Nurse of Antelope Valley Christian and James Williams of Stoneridge Prep. Second-team choices were Jamaal Flanagan of Antelope Valley Christian and Joseph Nessim of Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian.

In girls’ basketball, Monique Taylor of Channel Islands was a Division I-AA selection.

In I-A, Alex Gientke of Ventura and Kelly Greathouse and Courtney Young of Buena were chosen. Kristine Gleisberg of Ventura made the second team.

Jennifer Lacy of Agoura made the Division II-AA second team.

In II-A, Alex Mallen of Newbury Park was selected. Gracie Coronado of Burroughs and Crystal McCutcheon of Antelope Valley made the second team.

In III-AA, Brooke Porter and L’Tanya Robnett of Harvard-Westlake and Kate Beckler of Alemany were selected. Sierra Hauser-Price of Notre Dame, Sarah Kolbeck of Santa Paula, Cortney Adams of La Canada and Karina Siam of Alemany made the second team.

In IV-AA, second-team selections included Sarah Kelso and Megan Wiser of Louisville, Michelle Bregar of Oak Park and Jackie Kolesar of Paraclete.

In IV-A, Shannon Fink of St. Bonaventure and Karri Keeble of Village Christian were second-team choices.

In V-AA, Eshaya Murphy of Montclair Prep was selected. Baharak Maleki of Buckley, Brittany Morris of Campbell Hall and Marley Webb of Montclair Prep were second-team picks.

In V-A, Amber Buehlman of Santa Clarita Christian and Brianne Smith of Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian made the second team.

* Rafael Berumen, a freshman center at New Mexico from Simi Valley, will not return to the Lobos next season.

Berumen played in half of New Mexico’s games this season, averaging seven minutes. He sat out the second half of the season because of a groin injury.

* Seniors Joey Penberthy and Joclin Julmist of The Master’s College have been selected to the National Christian College Athletic Assn. All-American team.

Penberthy led the Mustangs in scoring with a 20.2 average and Joclin led all NAIA players in rebounding with a 14.2 average.

* Freshman Lesley DuBois of Master’s was chosen to the NCCAA women’s All-American team. She averaged 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds.

FOOTBALL

* Tight end Alex Holmes of Harvard-Westlake has been added to the California roster for the California-Texas Shrine All-Star game June 24 at Cerritos College.

Holmes, who has signed with USC, is a senior at Harvard-Westlake but sat out last season because he had already played four seasons of high school football.

Other players from the region on the California team are quarterback Zac Wasserman and wide receiver-defensive back Chris Catalano of Westlake, fullback-linebacker Pat Norton of Hart and defensive lineman Travis Johnson of Notre Dame.

Jim Benkert of Westlake will coach the team.

FENCING

* The Junior Pacific Coast Championships of the U.S. Fencing Assn. will be held Saturday and Sunday at Chaminade High. More than 300 fencers are expected to compete in 30 events.

Derek Snyder of Chaminade, one of the top youth fencers in the nation, is a two-time gold medalist in the JPCC.

Competition begins at 7:30 a.m. each day.

GYMNASTICS

* Aaron Kavanaugh of Encino won the Class 6 all-around title for 9-year-old boys at the state championships Sunday in Carson.

Kavanaugh won the rings and pommel horse and took second in the floor exercise, parallel bars and vault. He was third on the high bar.

Kavanaugh is a member of Gymnastics Olympica USA in Van Nuys and will compete with the Southern California all-star team at the Region I championships in Bakersfield on April 7-9.

SWIMMING

* Aron Gyuris of Thousand Oaks High and Conejo Simi Aquatics placed fifth in the men’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.23 seconds in the Speedo Junior Championships’ West regional meet Saturday in Anchorage.

Gyuris was seventh in the 100 butterfly in 51.14 on Friday.

Kara Denby, 13, of Conejo Simi Aquatics placed second in the women’s 50 freestyle in 23.88, behind a national-record winning time of 23.69 by Amy Thurman of Orinda Aquatics. Denby placed 15th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26.

Grace Peterson of Ventura High and Buenaventura Swim Club finished sixth in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:58.92 on Saturday and was seventh in the 500 free in 5:00.50 on Friday.

Travis Taylor of Crescenta Valley High and Rosebowl Aquatics finished 13th in 4:36.64 in the men’s 500 freestyle and was 18th in 16:03.20 in the 1,650 freestyle.

BASEBALL

* Jeff Suppan, former Crespi pitcher, has been selected opening day starter for the Kansas City Royals on Monday.
