Team Will Keep Its Core Together

Better get used to this Sacramento King team because they don’t seem to be going anywhere.

Chris Webber, Jason Williams and Vlade Divac are signed to multiyear deals, which leaves the Kings ready to deal with the key free agents they want to keep, namely reserve guard Tony Delk and backup center Scot Pollard.

Delk, who was signed as a free agent last August, has value as an offensive threat off the bench. Pollard is just 25, has size and is a force inside.

The Kings have shown interest in getting a long-term contract done for 6-foot-9 second-year forward Predrag Stojakovic, who has one year left on his rookie deal.

Meanwhile, the long-term fortunes of Corliss Williamson, Lawrence Funderburke and Tyrone Corbin aren’t clear. Williamson can return at his option, but seems more interested in becoming a free agent. Corbin and Funderburke don’t seem to be priorities.

Pete Carril, the Kings’ assistant coach who had a heart attack Saturday before practice at Arco Arena, was released Tuesday from Sutter Memorial Hospital. Carril, 69, said he was glad to be going home. “The win the other night . . . was the best possible medicine I could have received in getting better,” Carril said.

Byron Scott update: Besides being on the so-called short list for the coaching job at Indiana to take over for Larry Bird, the Kings’ assistant coach is also mentioned as a candidate in Atlanta, although the Hawks were said to be more interested in a big-name coach to replace Lenny Wilkens.

For what it’s worth, the Kings sold out 37 of 40 regular-season games at Arco Arena and both games against the Lakers.
