Simi Valley High has hired well-traveled Steve Carroll as football coach.

Carroll, who guided Riverside San Gorgonio to an 8-4 record last season, takes over a program that has a 18-51-1 record since 1993, including 1-9 last season.

Carroll, a former player at Kansas, has coached at Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Culver City and Rice High in Texas.

He also served as defensive backs coach at the University of Nevada.

“We’re extremely excited to get this guy,” said Roger McCamy, Simi Valley’s athletic director. “[He’s] very impressive.

“Very charismatic. Very confident. He really knows what he wants to do. The kids are going to love him.”

Carroll played for Kansas from 1978-82, where he was awarded the Jack Wolfe Memorial Scholarship for academic achievement.

Carroll replaces Ron Veres, who was fired after last season.
