Santa Margarita Rallies to Win Volleyball Title

Seventh-ranked Santa Margarita relinquished a two-game lead before coming back to beat No. 8 Mater Dei, 15-10, 15-9, 9-15, 11-15, 16-14, Thursday at Santa Margarita to win the Serra League boys’ volleyball title.

Leading, 14-11, in the final game, Mater Dei (4-2 in league) served for the match six times but could not end it. The Eagles scored the winning point on Reid Bradshaw’s kill.

Dustin Creager had 21 kills and Blake Robinson had 20 for Santa Margarita (12-5, 6-0).

In the Century League:

Foothill 3, El Modena 0--Kevin Logan had 14 kills for the Knights (12-2, 10-0), who won, 15-5, 15-4, 15-10, to clinch the league championship. El Modena is 11-6, 8-2.

In South Coast League diving finals:

Ray wins--El Toro’s Ray Vincent scored 640 points to win the South Coast League boys’ one-meter diving title at the Marguerite Swim Complex in Mission Viejo.

Tiffany Manning of Capistrano Valley took the South Coast League title in girls’ diving with 552.45 points.

In the Sea View League finals:

Banks wins title--Carly Banks of Laguna Hills scored 480.20 points to win the league title.

In the Serra League finals:

Santa Margarita sweeps--Rachelle Routsong took first (488.40) in girls’ competition and Michael Hilde of Servite won the boys’ title with 588.35 points.

In Empire League badminton finals:

New champion--David Wang, a Katella sophomore, beat defending league champion Sothea Kiet, 15-4, 15-8. With her girls’ singles victory, Cypress’ Aya Westbrook won the girls’ singles championship to finish the regular season 23-0.

In the Garden Grove League golf finals:

Jones wins--Zach Jones of Orangewood Academy shot a two-day total of 162 to win the individual title at par-74 Los Serranos. Justin Ritchie and Jerry Podgajski of Pacifica also qualified for the Southern Section individual finals.

In the Orange League finals:

Sader wins--Ryan Sader, a Brea Olinda junior, shot a 222 to win league individual honors at Alta Vista. Teammates Chris Heintz (225) and Ryan Wright (226) finished second and third.

In the Garden Grove League boys’ swim finals:

Pacifica wins--Pacifica won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and finished with 327 points. Garden Grove was second with 276 and La Quinta third (231).

In the Orange League finals:

Valencia wins--Mike Lightfoot won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.59) and 200 freestyle (1:53.35) to lead Valencia, which scored 385 points to 300 for runner-up Brea Olinda.

In the Orange League girls’ finals:

Batchelor leads Brea--Sophomore Sarah Batchelor won the 100 butterfly (1:03.28) and 200 individual medley (2:19.54) for first-place Brea Olinda, which outscored runner-up Valencia, 444-231.

In the Golden West League tennis finals:

Nieto wins--Saddleback’s Ralph Nieto won the singles’ title by defeating Gilbert Teran of Santa Ana, 6-4, 6-1.
