Ball, Barba Homers Stir Chatsworth, 3-0

Jacob Ball and Ryan Barba hit consecutive home runs to lead off the fifth inning, breaking up a no-hitter and lifting top-ranked Chatsworth High to a 3-0 West Valley League victory over visiting Cleveland on Thursday.

Freshman right-hander Justin Cassel (3-0) limited Cleveland to one hit through six innings. Reliever Oscar Marin came in with runners at first and second with none out in the seventh and retired three consecutive batters to earn a save.

Sophomore Byron Grubman was the tough-luck loser for Cleveland (10-13, 3-9 in league play). The sophomore held Chatsworth (21-1-1, 12-0) to four hits.

El Camino Real 9, Birmingham 3--Greg Acheatel (7-3) scattered six hits and Conor Jackson had a home run, a double and scored three runs for the Conquistadores (17-6, 10-2) in a West Valley League victory at Birmingham.

Raul Campos and Jimmy McGrath each had two hits for the Patriots (16-10, 5-7).

Sylmar 5, Van Nuys 0--Eddie Camacho (6-2) and Jaime Mah combined on a one-hitter for the Spartans (16-7, 9-3) in a Valley Mission League victory at Sylmar.

Camacho did not allow a hit in five innings, striking out seven and walking three.

Mah surrendered a hit to Edgar Dela Cueva with one out in the sixth inning. Alvaro Santos had two hits and three runs batted in for Sylmar.

Kennedy 4, Monroe 0--Tim St. Pierre (5-1) threw a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked three for the Golden Cougars (16-10-1, 9-3) in a Valley Mission League game at Monroe.

Juan Sepulveda had three of Kennedy’s seven hits.

Kennedy parlayed a single and three errors into three runs in the fifth.

San Fernando 6, Reseda 0--Ruben Nevarez, Jesse Moreno and Jose Montes combined on a one-hitter for the Tigers (15-10, 10-2) in a Valley Mission League victory at San Fernando.

Reseda (2-13, 0-12) led off the fifth inning with a single against Moreno, who relieved Nevarez (2-1) in the fourth. San Fernando’s trio had 11 strikeouts.
