Irvine Makes a Big Splash at Sea View Finals, Wins Two Titles

The Irvine boys’ and girls’ swim teams won Sea View League titles Friday at Newport Harbor.

The top-ranked Vaquero boys scored 607 points, helped by first-place finishes in three events. Suruk Pattanasinth won the 100 butterfly in 53.60 seconds, finishing ahead of teammates Peter Schafer (55.59) and Chris Peck (55.63).

Newport Harbor finished second with 489 points, led by double winner Aaron Peirsol, who won the 200 individual medley (1:53.06) and the 100 backstroke (51.30). Laguna Hills was third (366).

The Irvine girls won five events, scoring 544 points.

Sarah Hamilton won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.68), Leslie Christiansen won the 50 freestyle (25.12), and Stephanie Hsiao won the 100 freestyle (52.74) for the Vaqueros.

Laguna Hills finished second with 487 points, followed by Newport Harbor (453), Aliso Niguel (219) and Woodbridge (195).

In the Century League finals:

Foothill wins--The Canyon girls were undefeated in league dual meets, but Foothill won the league finals to earn a co-championship with the Comanches.

Erin Volcan of Canyon set two meet records, finishing in 23.83 in the 50 freestyle and 57.61 in the 100 butterfly.

In the Empire League finals:

El Dorado sweeps--Jill Kurvers won the 50 and 100 freestyle events in 26.35 and 57.73, respectively, and Nicole Gigante won the 200 freestyle (2:05.03) and the 500 freestyle (5:35.52), giving El Dorado the girls’ title.

Senior Matt Van Eck led El Dorado to the boys’ title, finishing first in the 50 freestyle (21.65) and 100 freestyle (48.64) and anchoring the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

In the Freeway League finals:

Troy, Sunny Hills win--Despite not winning an event, Troy won the boys’ title, led by Brandon Secrest, who took second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.21), and Ryan Sauchili, who placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:05.60).

Sunny Hills won the girls’ title, as Elenor DeLeon won the 100 butterfly (1:04.71) and Carissa Abe won the 100 freestyle (54.92).

In the Pacific Coast League finals:

No. 6 Corona del Mar and University win--John Graas won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.61 and the 100 freestyle in 49.56 for Corona del Mar, which won by more than 100 points. Teammate Sherwin Kim won the 200 individual medley (2:02.81) and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.72).

In the Serra League finals:

Santa Margarita sweeps--Jamie Kroeze was first in the 50 freestyle (24.48) and the 100 freestyle (54.42), and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:42.09) to lead the No. 4 Eagle girls’ team.

In the Sunset League finals:

Edison and Esperanza win--Keith Ryan, Brian Monroe, Cody Tague and Lucas Emhof won the 200 medley relay (1:40.14) as No. 9 Edison won the league title. Sixth-ranked Esperanza won the girls’ title.
