The South Coast League boys’ track and field finals were close all the way Friday, but the most excruciating moments didn’t come until the meet was over.

Dana Hills boys’ Coach Tim Butler questioned the final scoring, which had his Dolphins losing to Mission Viejo by 26 points. A recount revealed a 20-point addition error between the two teams, and the new math favored the Dolphins, who topped the Diablos, 127-123, at Trabuco Hills High.

The meet championship also gave the Dolphins the league title, their first in six years. Dana Hills, Mission Viejo and El Toro were 4-1 in league dual meets. El Toro took third Friday with 93 points.

The Dolphins put the meet away by winning the 1,600 relay, but got a big lift from their field events--in particular, Ryan Bourland’s first-place pole vault of 13 feet 6 inches.

Kris Monte of Capistrano Valley won the 400 (50.27 seconds) and 800 (1 minute 59.37 seconds).

The Mission Viejo girls ran away with the meet and league titles, topping second-place San Clemente, 147-99. El Toro finished third with 91.

The 10th-ranked Diablos were led by Amanda Fleskoski, who finished first in the shotput (38-9), discus (117-8) and 300 hurdles (46.24).

Mission Viejo’s Dana Bethel also had a strong meet, finishing first in the 100 hurdles (14.52) and long jump (17-8).

San Clemente sophomore Marquita Taylor finished first in the 100 (12.40) and 200 (25.56).
