Pinney’s Three-Hitter Helps Tritons Win Tournament

Junior Billy Pinney pitched a three-hitter to lead San Clemente to a 1-0 victory over Fontana Miller in the championship game of the Pride of the Coast baseball tournament Saturday at San Clemente.

The tournament final was postponed from an earlier date because of rain.

Pinney (5-3) struck out seven and worked out of a first-and-third jam with one out in the sixth, inducing a ground-ball double play.

Miles Farquhar singled with one out in the second inning to drive in Nick Lentine from second with the only run for the Tritons (13-11).

In nonleague baseball:

No. 4 University 15, Fontana 5 (6, mercy)--The Trojans sent 17 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored 13 runs on 10 hits. Sophomore third baseman Matt Stone had three hits, scored twice and knocked in a run. Jairo Ochoa (5-2) got the win for University (20-4).

In the El Segundo softball tournament:

Huntington Beach 2, North Torrance 1--In the consolation final, Ashley Perkins’ grounder to first with one out in the seventh scored Sandi Summers from third after Summers knocked the ball loose from the catcher. Tiffany Brown pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and also doubled in a run in the first inning for Huntington Beach (12-11).

In an earlier game, Perkins pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and also had an RBI double as the Oilers defeated Santa Monica, 5-1.

At the Michelle Carew Classic:

Los Alamitos 5, No. 4 Rosary 0--Center fielder Kristin Farber had three hits and stole four bases, giving her 35 this season for the Griffins (17-7) in the third-place game of the rain-delayed tournament. Darcy Brown drove in three runs, Amy Cummings had two hits and sophomore pitcher Kim Dillon (9-6) picked up the victory for the Griffins.
