Tustin Topples Pacifica in Battle of League Champs

William Diep had 23 kills and eight blocks as Tustin defeated Pacifica, 11-15, 15-7, 15-13, 15-7, in the first round of the Southern Section Division II volleyball playoffs Friday at Tustin High.

Andrew Rifkin added 21 kills and Joe Tran had 53 assists for the Tustin (17-0), the Golden West League champion. The Tillers advanced to play Santa Barbara San Marcos in the second round.

Pacifica, the Garden Grove League co-champion, ended 11-4.

In other Division II matches:

Foothill 3, Loara 1--Craig Astor had 26 kills and Ryan Burgess had 78 assists for Foothill (13-2) in a 15-2, 15-11, 13-15, 15-9 victory. Foothill plays Garden Grove in the next round. Loara finished 15-4.

Garden Grove 3, Santa Fe 0--Eduardo Rodriguez had 20 kills for host Garden Grove (12-7), which won, 15-11, 15-5, 15-13.

Mater Dei 3, El Modena 0--Joe Groff had 10 kills for third-seeded Mater Dei (10-4), which won, 15-2, 15-4, 15-11. The Monarchs will play South Pasadena Tuesday.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 3, Ocean View 0--Bishop Montgomery advanced to the second round with a 15-7, 15-7, 15-11 victory.

Valencia 3, Pomona Garey 0--Brian Bartczak had 13 kills for Valencia (18-1), which won, 15-3, 15-5, 15-4, and will play Woodbridge Tuesday.

Woodbridge 3, Hemet West Valley 0--Casey Armstrong and Scott Sebek each had 17 kills and Dave Grijalva had 11 for visiting Woodbridge (11-5, 4-4), which won, 15-10, 15-9, 15-10.

In Division III:

Laguna Beach 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--The host Artists (8-11) won, 15-7, 15-4, 15-4, and will play St. Margaret’s, the Academy League champion, Tuesday.

Whittier Christian 3, Riverside Notre Dame 0--Fourth-seeded Whittier Christian advanced with a 15-2, 15-2, 15-1 victory to play the Pasadena Poly-Paraclete winner.
